looking at getting one, and i have seen some cheap ones for about £10 but they don't seem to come with a power cable and only usb..

would this be ok for the dreambox or am i going to need one with an actual power connection and not just powered by usb?

There is no eSATA cable provided with DM800. Instead an internal sata cable is provided.
Regarding the question, I think that the drive(2.5" not 3.5" that need separate power) is powered by eSATA port in DM800, or at least it should be so.

can anyone confirm?

looking at getting the esata enclosure which will obviously be connected to the esata port on the dm800

but the enclosures i have seen don't come with a power connection, i guess they are powered by the esata cable or usb cable?

you will need to get a powered external enclosure for the db800
no power is supplied by the esata connection

Totally correct no power down esata only data transfer...I got a A. C. Ryan Alubox..excellent...remember cheap boxes have cheap fans which are noisey

yes mate lol...

i have a fan inside the dm800 where the internal drive would normally go, and as the hdd's are that small a nice small enclosure externally would never be noticed and yes i have the newer dm800 which has more vents at the bottom and the higher feet, and it felt to hot for my liking, plus after reading about the heat issues before buying it, thats the first thing i did after setting it up was stick a fan inside it

it is nice and cool now, but the fan runs all the time now, wonder how long before that burns out lol

but would it come with its own ac power cable or would we need to purchase one

as like many this seems to have USB 5V Power Cable
thanks

The 3.5" AC Ryan Alubox came with its own power adaptor and cord etc...so I ASSUME the 2.5"variant would do the same. Re other boxes not having power input socket, I can only think they will have to be connected to USB aswell as esata, and they will get there power from there....double checked ysterday and there is no power down esata according to pin designation. good luck.

i read that the dm800 usb is under powered and wont power the external drive, thus needed its own ac power adaptor

thanks
