this can easily be done on my 7020 using the vlcf 1.80 plugin.
i cant speak for the 800,but im sure there must be an equivelent frontend plugin for E2 images.ian.

Surely you can directly from the hdd? I can't try this as I have no hdd but if you can play mkv files then surely xvid's as well?

No, the only way to play .avi files on the DM800 is through VLC streaming. Playing off a HDD or USB will not work.

The reason it can play .mkv files is that it has a H264 decoding chip on the main board which allows it to play this files type...

You have to use computer VLC player on it and VLC plugin on DM800 because DM800 do not support directly playing avi files.
VLC on computer makes reeltime transcode avi (or some other files) to mpeg2 and then dream can play it (other boxes like azbox or Ipbox can play directly).
But I must admitt that picture quality is lower if you play it on this way :(

Dreambox 800 can read TS format so you may need a AVI to TS Converter than Dreambox can play.

Yeah this is a bit disappointing really. I was gonna use it as a stand alone media player but not to have avi support is a real downer. MKV files play well but the only trouble with this is it's slow transferring files over the network connection. 8gb files take ages. I actually think the ps3 is one of the best stand alone media players out there. Crap for games though hehehe
