*** Firstly and most important - make a full back up copy of your Tomtom !!! ***
this is achieved using the free program TOMTOM HOME from their website
Also you can make a note of your DeviceID code - you may possibly need it later to activate your maps
To get it tap the GPS bars on bottom right of your screen, then on next screen tap the small box that shows the Navcore version number -
your DeviceID code is a 10 character code similar to this - ABC12 345DE
it is at the top of that information screen
********************************* ************************
If you have an earlier Tomtom unit - Go300, 500, 700, 510, 710, 910 and some of the Tomtom One units and want to use the 'extras' such as ALG (Lane Guidance), IQ Routes & possibly ASR (Speech Recognition) then you will need to use a ready patched S/E version of Navcore - but you may find that your Tomtom does not operate 100% with a patched Navcore. To use any of the maps that have ALQ, IQ Routes etc....
Navcore 9.510 SE for X00, X10, ONE ONE_XL
http://www.filefactory.com/file/4afjkexmo8wz/n/9.510-SE_X00_X10_ONE_ONE_XL.zip
(I have not tested or tried either of these latest Navcores,
I've got a Go730 and I use the latest official (but patched) version.)
********************************* ************************
If you have a Tomtom Go 520, 720, 920, 530, 730, 930, 540, 740, 940 or the new OneXL with IQ Routes etc., you don't really need a SE version of Tomtom Navcore, just use the latest official version available, use Tomtom Home to get the latest update.
If you are using a Genuine version of Navcore then you will need to 'Patch' the "ttsystem" file on your Tomtom if you want to use a 'copied' map. Use Tomtom Home to update your Tomtom to the latest version of Navcore before you do any patching or adding any new maps.
If you have problems patching it, then here is a copy of the latest SE (modified & patched) version of Navcore v9.530 SE for GO x20, x30, x40 units

Here's Albert's Activation Tool v0.57.21 with new me ta file dated 24-11-13
http://www.filefactory.com/file/j7uixr3w9ad/EA5_v0.57.21_**** 24-11-13.zipUse this tool to patch the ttsystem file on your Tomtom if you are using genuine copy of Navcore (Tomtom software), use STEP 6 to do this task.
**** REPLACE the **** in the above link with m e t a (but without any spaces) *******
********************************* ************************
Once you have got the Navcore on your Tomtom add the map folders as required and the postcode files (these are in the folder named ' zip ' - copy this folder to your Tomtom).
To use the Activation Tool to activate your map :-
Keygen Steps :-
Step 1 - Select the keygen to use (in most cases it will be TT8_Keygen)
Step 2 - Enter your DeviceID or find the ttgo.bif file on your Tomtom
Step 3 - Browse to the Map Folder on your Tomtom
Step 4 - Browse to the **** file on your PC - this should be in the same folder as the Activation Tool - you could also try to download the latest **** file from Albert's server.
Step 5 - Click - Generate the *.dct file for your map
Disconnect your Tomtom from your PC and start it up.
Note - every time you start up your Tomtom after you have either removed your memory card or connected it to your PC it may take a few minutes to boot up.
********************************* ************************
If you want to use Tomtom Home to operate your Tomtom while connected to your PC or to download the MapShare Updates you will have to patch your Tomtom Home .dll file on your PC. The location of this varies depending on your operating system, but it will be in a hidden folder so you may need to set your PC to show hidden files & folders.
First you will have to use Tomtom Home and try to Operate your Tomtom Device - you will then have to download a file to do this, let the file download & install. Next disconnect Tomtom from PC & close Tomtom Home (right click on icon by the clock on your PC to do this). Then run STEP 6 in Albert's Activation Tool - Patch my Home DLL.
XP Users:

Tomtom Home v2.2 - x.x :-

Mac Users:-

********************************* ************************
There are other tools available to do all of the above tasks - BBSTools, & BenBBS Tools if you have problems using Albert's Activation Tool.
Check out the other threads in this section for the latest map & postcode file releases.
also , extra info to clarify
ALG = assisted lane guidance - tells you what lane to be in
IQ Routes - Intelligent Routing - works out quicker routes depending on the time travelled.
So, if you patch the updated the maps with the above file, that will work fine, without any problems.
But if you wanted these other features, you would have to use a higher navcore version.
Depending on your old map version you MIGHT be able to copy the mapsettings.cfg file from your old map folder to the new map folder - this is the file that saves your Favourites & Home locations, but it can cause your tomtom to freeze during start up, if it does this then delete the file. you might also need new voice files, but you can get them free from Tomtom by using TT Home. You should not need any other files.
Original question:-
I wasnt sure if you can use different navcores on any tom tom , or any pna for that matter
in other words if a tom tom is up to date when it checks tom tom home , and is on say 7.9 navcore , I wasnt aware that a later patched navcore could be used on that machine , in order to use extra features for instance
I took the safer option of having the tom tom 1 v4 up to date and used the latest maps at the time that I knew worked for it
and my pna runs 7.910 so decided to leave that alone with the newest maps and speedcams
ANSWER:-
You can use different navcores on the genuine tomtom navigators - they usually work, but not always, I've known some users have problems while others with an identical model have not had any problems. By using version 8.204 or higher you can then use the IQ Routes & ALG. There are newer navcore versions available now, the v8.204 I posted is several years old now & was the copy of the one I got to work on my old Go500 (the official version for this is still v7.9**). Since I have had my Go730 I have not had need of unofficial versions (yet lol) as I just use Home to get the latest version & then patch it.
If users are happy to use their navigators without IQ Routes & ALG, then the best option is to use the official version & then patch it. All other units & PDAs etc using Tomtom cannot use v8.*** navcores.
Question
I have updated the navcore to 8.204 and patched the map....thought it was going fine until l tried to find a street, then it crashed...
I assume that l should try another version of the patched navcore....guess its trial and error now until l find a stable one...
Answer
Did you use the postcode seach when this happened ?
If yes - then change keyboard to qwerty & use small letters. If no - then try another version.
