Hi all

Sorry if this question sounds a bit stupid,

But I was looking in stickys for the DM800 and i see the second stage bootloader mentioned , Can someone explain what this is for and do i need it if my box is only a couple of weeks old?

Thanks

Chris

The second stage loader is basically the bios of the dreambox in a way. It helps the box to run better and smoother, and is also used by dmm as a way to check for clones. No-one really knows what the differences between the different loaders are, as dmm do not seem to publish this information, unfortunately...

What we do know, is that if you have a clone box, then do not use any bootloaders after 69, as this has a detection for the clones...

You can check which bootloader you are running by restarting the box, and at the very beginning of bootup, it tells you there (very quickly, so look out carefully) which version you have. Even though yours is a new box, it may still only have a bootloader of 69 or 70. So if I were you, I'd upgrade to 72...

new clones can have the latest bootloaders

existing clone users will have to swap out their sim cards with a new one, hope the clone sellers give this out free.

still waiting on my contact to get back to me regarding the sims

it's like to send to the box an regular image .
flashing with an bootloader (secondstage xxx) will be done quickly (because small file) and it will not erase your settings...
take a look here

There are two ways to add the newest bootloader. Grab the nfi file, and install it the same way as you would a normal image, or download the ipk file, send it to the dreambox (/tmp is the best place), and then run the following command from a telnet window:

ipkg install /tmp/dreambox-secondstage_72-r0_dm800.ipk

You should then see the status of the flashing and that all is successful...
