I personally recommend internal, but that is because I prefer everything to be compact. I prefer not to have the extra box/cables of a hdd. But others will say external is better. But tbh, I don't think there is much difference now. The choice is whether you prefer internal or external. If external however, ensure you go for an esata type rather than usb...
As for make, all should work the same. I personally have a 320gb western digital and it works great. Go for as big a size as you can afford is my recommendation. afaik, the dm800 supports hdd up to 500gb atm...

one other point is that the internal hdd would have to be a 2.5 inch sata drive , whereas an external drive can be 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch in size , and the 3.5 inch drives cost a lot less too
and external esata would be preferable to external usb

Hi.
I just put a Western Digital Scorpio (internally) 160gb on Friday &
is working ok so far. It's just a laptop type drive really.
Done a manual timed recording & also an EPG selected timed recording
& both have worked well. The HD quality is still as good too.
I went for internal because it just looks neater & it out of the way.
Hope this hepls.

I too put in an internal 320Gb 2.5inch drive as its much neater setup plus I knew if I put in a larger disk it would just fill up with too much crap.
Can't remember what make it was think it was a Western Digital and I'm pretty sure it was one of those greener drives that spins down when not used more to ensure its quiet than anything else and it works a treat

Is our WD 7200rpm or 5400rpm. Just have heard that quicker disk are more noisy? Need it add ventilator or it not going hot?

just added an external seagate 160 gig sata hdd using a sata to esata hdd cable off e bay , and powered the drive and the dm800 using an old AT psu from a pc ( the ones with the proper mains power on/off switch ) with the 12 v positive yellow going to the inner and black earth to the outer of a power plug that fits in place of the dm800 power supply ( ie:- same power plug as the original ). this unit can also power a notebook cooler either directly from the 12v yellow or 5v red lead as required , or from the usb ports at the rear of the dm800 , and can power the sata hdd as well. the notebook cooler can also cool the hdd if the drive is placed inside a suitable cheap hdd housing bay as sold on e bay , or any similar metal case
bear in mind you should be confident in electrical wiring and diy before attempting this and test your connections are correct before connecting the hdd or the dm800 , you do it at your own risk so dont blame me if you get it wrong !
I took this 3.5 inch sata 160 gig hdd from a sony 770 dvd recorder I recently upgraded to 500 gig so effectively its cost me very little to achieve this using the esata connector on the back of the unit. just an old housing I had , this spare drive and a cheap lead from e bay :)
I may house it all in a small computer case sometime in the future
so for a cheaper option than 2.5 inch internal sata laptop drives consider using an external 3.5 inch sata drive as the cost is much less :)
good luck either way

a stupid question but when adding an internal hard drive
1) do i have to do any wiring
2) do i need any leads
is there any guides on how to install one

the leads are supplied with the receiver , the hdd drive is 2.5 inch sata , connect up after screwing the hdd to the carrier using suitable screws , put lid on , job done

Hmmm - looking at West Dig 320GB SATA drives now myself - does the DM800 support SATA2 (300) or just 1 (150)?
Thanks

dunno, but sata2 are backwards compatable anyway, so may as well get the sata2 anyway... Mine's a sata 2.
This is the model of the Western Digital I have, and have no problems: WD5000BEVT
