Im still looking for a satnav... Stop laughing, seriously I am....
I'm just taking my time looking so I can make an informed decision..

Ive been looking at just buying something cheap for now, like a Tomtom one.

But I see there are different versions i.e. V2/V3, V4 etc..
What does this V2/V3 etc mean? Is it just the software that comes loaded on the unit? If so can the unit be upgraded simply by downloading files from the internet and updating the it?

Also if the unit comes pre-loaded with UK maps, I presume if I was going abroad, I could download different maps and load them on to it ??

Ive been programming cams & cards etc for satellites etc for years, so Im sure I can soon get my head around a tomtom, lol...

Easy enough to upgrade & add extra maps - have a look in the Tomtom section in here. Not sure what all the differences are in all the different units - but try to get one that can use a memory card,

How do you know which models have SD card slot?

Ive been looking at a few websites and there isnt any mention of SD card slots in the specification.. Is there an easy to follow comparisson chart somewhere?

Ive been doing a bit of research and have found the TomTom One XL has an SD card slot..

So I have ordered one of them from a site that is offering them at £91.99 and are throwing in a free carry case.. Normally around £146.95 + £14.95 for the case, so I think it sounds like a good deal..

No doubt I will be back here scouting for info & files when it arrives, lol...

OK - first thing to do is to make a full back up copy of the internal memory, don't think you will have anything on the SD card yet (not even sure if it is supplied with a SD card).
Next thing to do is to connect up to Tomtom Home & get any upgrades etc & check if there are any newer maps as you can get a free map update within 30 days of getting your Tomtom.
You should not really need to do any patching etc. until you want to start using any copied maps.

Thanks for all your advice so far Russell1..

It comes with an SD card pre-loaded with UK & Eire maps, plus I have ordered a blank 2GB SD card, so I have plenty of space to add maps & P.O.I. etc..

Ideally I want to use it mainly for the UK, and just keep it up to date with speed cameras and P.O.I...

But I have also recently booked a holiday to Florida which includes three weeks car hire, so I would like to be able to load USA maps onto it, to find my way around while I'm over there..

I will try not to hassle you too much for advice if I can help it, I'm sure when it arrives I will soon suss it out... However it would be a really big help if you could point me in the right direction of which files/ keygens etc to use, and where to download them from?

Kind regards
Buster
