the simple answer is a stand alone amp is the best way to listen or get 5.1 6.1 7.1 ( in my opionion only )

amp was built purly for sound so should do this well.....hopefully someone will back me up lol ...

then depending on what audio equipment you have?
depends on what signal you get ........... hd reciver i have sends 5.1 6.1 true when on some h.d channels... 360 does

dvd if disc is 5.1 6.1 etc

but a good amp will simulate 5.1 -7.1 anyway ...hope this has answered your question ...sort of lol

I use a Sony amp with hdmi / 5.1 to 7.1. With that I use ps3 for my Blueray + sony DVD upscaler to 1080p. and of course my TM-6900 HD combo super. The Amp has 2in and 1out hdmi. Good luck.

Make sure you use good quality leads... HDMI/Digital Co-ox

let's not go down the quality leads and speaker cable road !!!!

i have flat speaker cable 4-4 -7-7 bi wired ..... got the cable really cheap as guy i know built his £40k cinema room ...

but i cant notice the sound difference with using this cable on my set-up !!!!

keith just get a good quality amp ... if you want decent sound

get a 5.1 amp with plenty of inputs, then connect the dvd thro' using the optical connections, and then connect the Sat box thro optical too. Just use the HDMI cable for the picture, best keep the sound side diff.

if the dvd player has built in amp they are generally not bad if after ......5.1

i sold a pioneer h.d with 5.1 and the sound wasn't too bad really ..

for basic listening ... tv sounds like what your after... so i think you will b happy with that ...

lrge shop prices are ok.........but you might want to check out flee bay when you find a model you like....

im running full size kef q series so needed a decent amp as bi- wired etc ...

Blimey here's me spending a lot of money, and you look like your doing it for peanuts. My amp cost me E600 about £550. at the time I bought it. But I must say I think you will find it hard to beat. Oh there are the big boys like p.....r + and a few others, but you are going into big money and for what. I also run a projector 1080i + hd TV. Most of my gear is Sony, and I am very happy with them. All I can say is my home cinema at the moment is the bees knees.

i got a good deal on my amp.. Yamaha RX-V3900 7.1

all im saying is if keith is asking about 5.1 sound !!

He hasn't got the audio bug and could end up saving a lot of money

if he is happy with dvd with built in amp... then gr8 ... because he will still get pretty good sound quality

well i have a toshiba rear projection at the moment(nonhd) ,, with 4 speakers connected by clips at the back of the tellie( dolbi prologic),,,
but with a hd tellie i will be getting would prefere speakers than sound just comming out of the television!! also my lounge is not that large,,,
however it seems a bit odd i guess having to keep the dvdplayer ON to get the sly hd to reproduce the sound in 5.1 ,, may be its me being daft!
