Hi
I've just ordered a external caddie for my HDD, so it's freed up the internal sata connection, i now want to install an internal fan, so question 1: can i do this? connect the fan power to the motherboard supply?
question 2: if so which black wire do i connect, from the right?

and then finally the last silver device has got to go, dont want to spray it, ideas please:respect-055:

see pics of all:bravo-009:

edit piccys are not that good there are 2 black wires on the sata connector

message to self get the bloody hang of taking good pictures:banghead:

was wondering the exact same thing myself :p

When I put the fan in my box, I put them as per the pdf file attached... i.e. both the wires are next to each other where the red/black one are.

As a side note, why are you removing the hdd from the box? Surely you may as well just keep the hdd in and position the fan over the chip?! Unless your fan is too big for that (mine's a 25mmx25mm fan).

both of the black wires are earth , so either can be used , I would use the one next to the red for earth and the red for 5 volts

the 12v is yellow , and the 5v is red , with 2 black earth wires

use a connector block , or solder your wires and tape them up for insulation

there is another thread on here with some details about this as well , and with pictures too

personally I wouldn't cut the wires. Just connect the wire into the base of the connector like in the pdf I attached. How I got mine running, and saves having to cut the wires...

Yes mate i can see now they way you did it, problem for me is as i said i dont have an internal sata HDD so there's no connection to the motherboard, so correct me if i'm wrong the only way i could then get it to work would be to connect a 4 pin sata power plug to the fan wiring?

not strictly true , as ANY suitable plug will do the job

with my first attempt I used the plug and wiring connected to an old pc internal speaker , its a 4 pin plug and slips easily over the onboard power connector. all you have to do is line up the correct colours , and the centre 2 are black = earth so its the 2 on the outside that really count , yellow = 12v and red = 5v ( check with a voltmeter if unsure )

the pins can be extracted from this 4 way plug so reposition one of them in the correct place for an earth , connect the fan , make sure its the correct way round ( mark it if necessary with coloured tape ) and slip over the onboard power connector , job done

other plugs like this are the ones attaching dvd roms to the sound card connector , pc speaker ones that connect to the motherboard where all the pins are for power , reset , spkr

so in the end I did not cut the supplied sata power lead either as I did not want to do it and there is no need to cut it , just use a suitable substitute

it may be possible to adapt the power plug and wires from the old white floppy power connector plug to do the same , snipping any plastic lugs off it where necessary , as I was debating on using these that I have cut off faulty pc psu,s in the past

but the old pc speaker wire with plug did the job so I discarded any other ideas

so would I cut the original sata cable ? definitely not

in my project I made a vow not to adapt or cut anything that would destroy my dreambox , in order that I can fit it back together if I so wish using original parts, therefore you think laterally , out of the box , and find other solutions to the problems that may occur

so use a pc speaker connector , or the dvd rom audio connector instead , and wire up according to the original using it as a guide only

here are some pictures of the fan connector and fan I made , along with an old pc speaker to show where the made up power lead came from

there is also some other pictures on show or in the zip file of other candidates for the task , floppy drive connector cables and a dvd to pc sound card lead showing the connectors available. you can obviously just plug them in with the unit powered off to check the fit etc , but make sure you know which wire goes where on this job , and double check with a volt meter all tasks and work you do
