LED or OLED ?

The difference is that current only goes to a lit LED but LCDs have a permanent backlight which consumes a lot more power.

The latest Samsungs are still true LCDs, but backlit by LED instead of fluorescent.

I don't think we'll see large OLED screens soon, the small screens that have been produced so far are prohibitively expensive, and the technology is known to be unreliable.

went to gadget show live and the led tvs which was around a 7" screen was around the £1300 mark so hate to think what a 42" would cost

Samsung do several 46" LED tv's at £1600 and £2000.

was going to have a look at one today but didnt get a chance , looking at the comments its not really anything new then , the way its being advertised its something special, ;)


the 40 inch is just over a grand.

still a good price considering i paid nearly £2000 for a 37 inch sony plasma only 3 years back.

From the review on hdtvtest.com, it appears the new Samsungs are not all they're cracked up to be. The main steps forward are the very slim cabinet and the lower power consumption, but it seems the LED backlight doesn't do the business picture wise.

The earlier Samsungs with CCFL backlights got better reviews.

They found that auto dimming on these screens causes problems

I've seen them in a few shops and they look amazing, so thin and nice... but the picture quality is also very, very good, very good. I do not dare to say amazing, but very good, probably the best I've seen in shops,
You can never trust the setups in the shops, nor the default samsung settings, though.
All the reviews I've read seem to rate them as very good indeed.
Bear in mind that currently only series 6 and 7 are available.
Series 8, with 200 Hz, and different LED arrangement/system, and higher price, of course, will be available, apparently from mid june. And later on there might be a series 9, I think.
Oh, and let's not forget the wired and wireless internet connectivity!

i saw 1 of these on qvc :) looked smart as hell but after watching the avforums video review of 1 of them i lost interest straight away. The video revealed the flaws of the sammy led backlighting so i would hold off until they perfect it in later models.

I've got hitachi 42" LCD monitor from richer sounds , £ 1000off from the normal retail price ...
1080P 24 100hz what else you want ,thinnest LCD on the market 35mm,IpC tech
all for £499!!!
hd picture 10/10 with no motion blur etc.
buy plasma if you'll watch sd tv

and if you are buying (monitors or TV) keep in mind that in some case you would need this connection: HDMI with HDCP or some content would not pass on to the monitor or tv

yes True but here in UK Almost every house has a freewiew box If not Sky digital Box so Tuner is not a problem ;)

Samsung LedTV Series 8 now out.
Not yet on Samsung's UK website (!?).
Some shops claim to have it in stock.
I saw the 46 inch (UE46B8000) (£2199!) yesterdat at H**** of F******, Lakeside, and it looks gorgeous, and the picture (most important) looked great.
Father's day soon... I'll try to convince the missus... keep dreaming.

seen 2 37 inch lcd and led next to each other with the same source led was a brighter picture but let down was the sharpness led won it .

Yes, I'd also like to see what the picture looks like with freeview.
I saw LedTV series 7 at J*** L**** a few weeks ago with BBC HD and it was superb (that my opinion, of course).

If the LED TV SD quality is Better Than Plasma or Close to CRT and I would say well worth of that money...

SD was always my big concern with LCD, and power consumption on the Plasmas panels. I have to say that Samsung really have cracked the issues with SD... I'm watching sat sourced SD on a series 6 Samsung now, and it's as good as any flat panel I've seen.

The set even makes freeview watchable at normal viewing distances, but putting freeview on a large screen is never going to be perfect.

However, before shelling out for one of the LED backlit sets, I would have a good read of the reviews... there are issues with them, and in some respects are not as good as the previous CCFL backlit screens. They do look smart though!
