View Full Version : Trouble with low symbol rate DVB-S2 feeds?

The BBC is testing DVB-S2 MPEG4 on Intelsat 801. My Vantage receiver receives these signals without problem but the Azbox Premium & Elite do not. I'm using the 2372 FW. These feeds are DVB-S2 s/r=1600 8PSK fec=5/6 and pilot off 11073V to 11107V. Anyone having the same trouble? Any comment from the Azbox team?

2371.
Try Pilot to 1.
And do tell. Good luck!

Also try with +1 or -1 on frequency... sometimes it is needed to do that to get signal.

I am having problems scanning a few transponders for e.g. on 4E... I can see 100% signal but it fails to lock onto them

Do you download any Gogo-list stuff into your Azbox?
Last time I had this problem it was because I download Gogo-list.
Now I have a clean channel list without any Gogo-list info and I have no more problem.

I don't use the Gogo-list because it does not have all the channels that I can get.
I use the Azboxedit and update the transponders using satellite.xml or via *********

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Tinos............yes I have tried freq+/-1. I am a regular contributer to the Lyngsat site and they like precise frequencies. So, I don't think I'm far off here.
Goran...........yes, I've tried pilot on/off as well as cycling through the various fec possibilities as fec=auto doesn't work on dvb-s2 signals.
I have found the 10E Eutelsat W2A is a good place to do tests. There are several DVB-S2 signals with low symbol rates to try. NBC on 11070H, FTV-See on 11152H, NBC on 11166H, APTN on 12631V. So, I've tested FW 2032,2371 and 2372 on these frequencies. 2032 performs the best only leaving FTV-See unlocked. On 2371 and 2372 only NBC and APTN can be unlocked.
I conclude that the Azbox is not good with low symbol rate stations using dvb-s2 at all but firmware 2032 works better than 2371 or 2372.
Perhaps we shall get new firmware soon with blindscan that works better with dvb-s2. I also hope that we shall be able to blindscan between frequency limits and choose polarity. It's nice to dream!

Hi!
It looks like the new drivers are not helping this problem, because firmware 0.9.2032 is the last one to use the old drivers.

Here's another good one to test out on NSS 7 @ 22W 11162H DVB-S2/QPSK SR 3404 FEC 5/6. Would be interested to see if the AZBOX can get this one, as i can get this on my Humax HDCI2000. I'm thinking of getting an AZBOX but might hold off a while if it's not very good with low SR's.

Satseeker,
I've just tried that Huntington Beach signal on NSS7 for you and it does work with firmware 2372. The pilot needs to be on though.

@kenlhuk,
Thanks for testing that one out! I'm presuming the lowest DVB-S2 SR that can be received by the AZBOX (or any other receiver for that matter) is about 3000. Anyone get anything lower than that?

yes
I get as low as SR 1400 in dvb-s2

Thanks for the info. Can you definately get a lock on the following channel?
Hispasat 30W 11647V DVB-S2/8PSK SR 1667 FEC 5/6

I can, it works fine with my Elite.
I've got DTV1 in that TP.
Maybe there isn't a problem with low SR with the azbox HD.
My Elite with bad weather cannot lock the TP 10719Mhz V SR: 27500 in 16º, my DM500S with ALPS tuner can.
In the same sat, my DM500S cannot lock in 11138Mhz H SR 27500, but my Elite can.
This was tested in the same time and same antenna and cable.
EDIT: This is with firmware 0.9.2371.
Maybe the Azbox HD tuner have problems with some specific TP?

Satsearcher,
I have also just tried the Hispasat 11647V signal and it locked here as well with FW 2372.
FTA fta,
I agree with you that the problem may well be one of an insesitive tuner. The Hispasat signal is around 12dB above the noise floor here on the spec an using a 1.2m dish. Most BBC feeds on Intelsat 801 are rather less in level. I noticed yesterday that with a rainy day in the UK these new feeds on Intelsat 801 were a bit higher in level. Maybe the BBC are having trouble with their fade margins using dvb-s2 s/r=1600 fec=5/6 and 8psk. Eventually there are to be 18 of these 2MHz wide signals all adjacent to each other. Sorting out one particular one of these is quite a challenge for a tuner. I have a Vantage HD8000S which does receive some of these signals OK but it is working close to it's threshold.

I have similar issues with my TM-6800 HD. Maybe this is a problem with all HD receivers?

Had my AZBOX for just over a week now, and tested it on some low SR DVB-S2 channels, had mixed results. Not managed to get a lock on FTV See on 10E with an SR of 2269, but managed to get a lock on a channel called Sonce on 18W using an SR of just 1181. So obviously not a low SR issue on some channels, must be something else preventing it from locking certain channels.
