I think can handle .srt, subresync (part of VobSub) can convert these I thnk, if not SubRip should definitely be able too.

.srt are text, therefore use less space and should play from the same directory as your .avi files (Xvid/DivX).

I'm pretty sure that Azbox HD can handle idx/sub like Dvico do. The problem is that when Opensat will add this feature to the new firmware. I think fixing idx/sub is much easier than CS part.

.sub/.idx are not often used, and really because most people are just too lazy to convert to text based subtitles and mux properly into an .mkv container.

There is no need for external subs imho!
