tried to play an xvid avi via media player on dm800 Dman m8ey,
and i get a message telling me i need
G Streamer plugin Avi Demuxer - not available :07:

and media center plugin possibly also needs it,
media center also locks up DB if avi is played.

X264 files play ok though :respect-059:

yeah, downloaded xvid/divx movies don't work, as the chip cannot support the xvid/divx codec, so cannot process it quickly enough. However, it can support mkv files, since it can handle the x264 codec (since it was developed for hd programmes). So, if you can download the x264 mkv files, then you should be able to just drop them on a hdd and play them directly on to the dm800...

DM800 doesn't play Xvid/Divx files natively, but you can play them via VLC on your pc.

I have found the best format to play natively is H.264 wrapped in a TS container, as they behave much better than MKV. TS files can be fast-forwarded without glitches, and DM will remember where you stopped. MKV's don't.

Dead easy (and quick!) to convert a MKV to TS (google) but you also need to ensure that the H.264 level is 4.1 or less (bitrates are too high with typical BluRay 5.1 level files).

Download the .avi file and convert it to mpeg2 using winavi or similar and then ftp the file to your hard drive /mpg/ folder.

Do the same with mkv files without having to convert them.

i don't understand where is this mpg folder, I've never seen it, so I can convert .ts format to mpeg-2 or mp4 and then put it to this mpg folder and it works?

Thats great guys been busy all day will try again tonight did try and convert a 200 meg segment of a 264 full 1080 hd movie to TS brought the bit rate to 96kbps it did work in the 800 but picture seemed a little broken not free flowing It took nearly 15 minutes to convert to TS and reduced the size from 200 meg down to 50megs I would have thought it would take hours to convert a full movie to TS (I used the free version of OJOsoft video converter)

Thanks echelon have created an mpg folder /media/hdd/mpg/ within the HDD of the 800 and put a .mkv movie in there, how can I watch this movie or do I need the Vlc player plugin to view it

Just press the video button on your remote to bring up the video files list from your HDD. It should be listed there. MKV files play fine directly from the hdd without any conversion needed. Shame they never included xvid/divx support

or use mediaplayer , and browse to your mkv folder (the new one you made) and add mkv titles to the playlist to play them , use the help button to find out what the buttons do

I copied an mpeg 2 file I converted from ts, seems to play pretty well in media player, I can fast forward but would not play back from that point rather it went back to the beginning of the video.
