Well I've has a bit of experience with this, running USB 3g modems on embedded linux devices. The current kernel will not recognise most of the 3g modems available, you will have to upgrade to 2.6.18+

However, there are patches and kernel mods available if you search around. Please tell us which dongle you have.

One its loaded up ok (confirm with dmesg) Its a simple matter of...

ipkg -> wvdial

run:

wvdialconf

vi /etc/wvdial.conf

edit the conf file for your provider (check APN settings)

and then run wvconf for your PPP connection.

Hope that helps a little.

I have todo this when I'm in my holiday apartment. what I do for easy is use laptop with usb modem and share the lan connection using a crossover cable for which I use as lan cable with a crossvover adaptor on the end.
I do admit I use this on a DM500 which has no usb port, the same would work on any receiver.
You have to set ip addreses but by googleing it for dm there is plenty info.
I also feel I'm more in control using laptop as I'm using Pay as you go contract.

d-dan's info is very interesting if my internet goes down.

D-dan thanks a lot!
I have Option Icon GIO225 3G modem, and this modem its finally automatically recognized in latest Ubuntu 9.10.

Where I can find these patches and kernel mods and how to install them in Azbox?

You would be better with a 3g router, but if you enjoy hurting yourself....

I haven't checked if the files are binarys or src. If you are lucky enough to get the src files, setup a cross-compiler and you should have a start point. :)

Good luck!

I had the same problem . I bought 4 "Devolo" ethernet mains connectors , which , as the name implies uses the electrical mains as your physical LAN . You only need 2 for a basic configuration . My 3G modem is connected to my main PC in the house which has Internet Sharing configured (default 192.168.0.1) . My linux box DM7020 is set up as 192.168.0.X . I've got 2 other PCs in the house sharing the same connection . That's why I bought 4 .

And that's it . The LAN ping time does reduce depending on the length of your house mains cables but I've had no problems using 30m+ .

Do a Google search on Devolo . They're great !
