View Full Version : Help Setting DB Using Crossover Cable
I've had my DB working for years now without a problem but I've just changed my setup at home and no longer wireless(Speed Issues). My pc is now connected to my Netgear Router using CAT5 and when I want to FTP keys etc to my DB I just connect another cable from the router to my DB. This works ok but means trailing a 10m cable every time also my router is now boxed in so is a bit more awkward to acces. So I want to just use my laptop and connect a crossover cable direct from this into my DB. I thought this would be straight foreward but I can't get it to work. DCC just keeps coming up with error send socket is not connected. Also when I use the IP search nothings found. I have disabled DCHP in the DB Comm settings and set my DB IP to 192.168.0.3 I have used this IP in DCC but still nothing. Can anyone please explain how I can connect direct from my Laptop using Vista and not via my router as I'm stuck.
Many Thanks

So I want to just use my laptop and connect a crossover cable direct from this into my DB. You need a straight cable between the router and the drambox, but a crossover cable when connecting directly. Also you need to set static ips to both the dreambox and your pc. Try pinging the dreambox once you do this and post back with the results.

Thanks for your help. No problem connecting via my router to DB I just use a normal CAT5 patch lead. The problem is just connecting directly from my laptop and not using my router. I will give it ago and try to set up the Static IP. Not to sure how but I'll do some digging.
Thanks

For the dreambox goto menu->setup->expert setup->communication setup, dhcp should not be checked, enter an ip (192.168.1.2) and netmask 255.255.255.0, the enable network checkbox should be checked. Press save and you are done.
To assign a static ip to your pc tell us what operating system you are using or google it if you cannot wait till someone replys.Give your pc an ip of 192.168.1.1 and netmask 255.255.255.0 This should get you going.

you have to assign the laptop ethernet port an unused ip address that matches the range you set in the DB (192.168.0.3).
could be anything between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.253 if you are using the IP address range distributed by your router.
192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.254 are most likely the routers address and it is safer not to use these 2.
I'm not 100% certain on this: on the laptop the IP address used by the wifi can not be the same of the ethernet (cable) IP address on the laptop. (2 different devices) could be even possible you need a different IP range for the cable network between laptop and DB (192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3). Within each segment used (Wifi & cable) the same subnet mask must be used.
If you don't want to share internet from Wifi to Lan cable you can forget about this:
On the laptop you need to share the Wifi lan with cable lan. Take a look in the Vista help if you can find anything on this. I'm not familiar with Vista or sharing different networks on computers, could be bridging.

The best solution would be to assign each component, dreambox, pc, laptop, wifi of laptop its own static ip. As for the subnet, in general it doesn't have to be the same.

Thanks for clarifying subnet mask, it does indeed not matter in a small home network and agree with using static IP addresses not allowing devices to pick a random IP addresses on boot up. Makes life a lot easier when you have a multiple devices connect in your home network.
