View Full Version : DVD recording and playback
After I had gained the basic knowledge of "how to" about my DM8000 and was then lulled into enjoying HD channels for some months I somewhat discontinued the further neccessary learning about the box which now leaves me with some basic questions unanswered.
I finally payed attention to the installed DVD drive and wanted to try it. I thought it would be easy but now I see Iīll need some help with it. The DVD Player menu in the main menu leads me nowhere. Then I went to Plugins > DVD Burn but couldnīt see a way out either.
Is there a software neccessary to activate DVD? If so, which one, where should I look for it? Would someone explain a complete "how to" on this matter? I have been looking for a post to explain it, but couldnīt find one.
DVD drive installed in my box is RW SATA LITEON, the image used is Nabilo BlackHole v012 in multiboot.

look what sandra from multimedia site told me to do to get my dvd player up and running::
Using an FTP program you need to send the file to the /tmp folder on the dreambox.
Open the FTP program and usually the left hand window will be the directories, folders and files on your PC and the right hand window will show the directories, folders and files on your dreambox.
Locate the folder in the left hand window where you have extracted the .ipk file to and then open the folder in the right hand window that is the tmp one.
Drag the .ipk file from the pc side into the dreambox side and once it says transfer complete you can close the FTP program.
I use Dreambox Control Centre to use telnet so will explain the procedure for that.
Open the program and click on the Telnet option on the left hand side of the window.
You will see root@dm8000:~# followed by a flashing cursor.
You need to type the following instruction exactly (nb. There is a space between the end of install and / ) :
ipkg install /tmp/libdvdcss2_1.0svn20080519-r0_mipsel.ipk
Once you have double checked that you have typed it correctly hit the enter key on your keyboard and you should see lots of text happening in the window.
When it has finished you should be able to play any DVD, I had to reboot before it worked .
after you do that you need to install durn dvd pliugin if you want to burn dvd

Don't use either the DVD or Nabilo, but have a look round the Nabilo forum as well for possible answers.

@oldfart
Would you suggest me to use DVD with Gemini? I have a Gemini 450 in USB also. But I would still need some instruction.
@sammmy
I know how to ftp and telnet m8, but I donīt know where to get the .ipk file. Can you tell me?
PS: Got the file alright.

@luis
Sorry never used Gemini, so I can't comment.
I use OoZooN and have done since I found several 'issues' with Nabilo. I have used the DVD in the past (with OoZooN) - but never written one.
Although OoZooN is a little bit more challenging to setup, it is a CVS image - so there are updates most days! I haven't found anything I want to do that it can't manage. There is loads of support (albeit mostly in German) - but there is some English support on here.
The issues are with drivers being loaded in flash, which is an image issue. - so another OS won't help if loaded via multi-boot. If the drivers aren't loaded, then you have to go searching.
If you look at most of the questions/issues here with the DM8k - they are with Nabilo ....... hmmmm .........

Thank you oldfart. Yes, Iīve seen the reported problems regarding DVD activation in Nabilo. Iīd rather stay away from all this hassle and forget about DVD. In fact I donīt really need it, I just wanted to try it for experimental purposes. I have a 1 TB HDD installed and thatīs all I need.

Just 'backup' your DVDs and put them on a server - we have 2.5TB on a XP server - works just fine!
