800 or 8000

Hi I am looking to upgrade to HD and need a bit of advice, my plasma TV only has a DVI connector so would the DM 800 be a better option for me or would the DM 8000 do the job.

Both should work just fine, but you may need to output the audio separately. HDMI is just DVI + Audio + copy protection.

If you can afford it, the 8000 is a nice bit of kit.

Re affording the 8000 (there are no pockets in shrouds) or so I keep telling myself.
Was more worried about HDMI to DVI connection.

have both my 800 is a clone but works great,and the 8000 is the best box i ever had sadly just over priced but stilll works great with no problems and if you can afford it go for the 8000

What do you actually want from your box? HD is available from both, and you mentioned that you just wanted hd... So, if this is all you want, then go for the 800. If you want more, and have more money, then maybe the 8000 is worth it for you! If you want to record more than one channel on different transponders, or record one channel and watch another on a differnt transponder, then the 8000 will fit the bill perfectly, whereas the 800 will not do this. However, to do this, you will need a dual lnb with both feeds going to both tuners of the 8000 (also, you can do up to 4 feeds to all 4 tuners - if you buy the extra 2 - the record up to 4 channels, or record 3 channels and watch another one).

Also, the 8000 will be able to play xvid/divx files (apparantly), whereas the 800 will not. Another thing for the 8000 over the 800 is that it supports dts pass through. So, if you have an mkv file with dts audio, you can pass the audio through the optical to your receiver to play this audio. Although since you said you only have an optical audio receiver, then this probably won't be a thing you want...

So, make your mind up to what you want, but I think from what you've said, a dm800 will be enough for your needs. Means you also save some money ;)

I never record anything these days anyway so I think you are right, common sense wise I should go for the 800 or wait and see what develops on the HD front.

If budget is not the question, go for the 8000, I have both, two 8000 and two 800, the one 800 is very handy (nice in white) as it is just beneath my desktop without an antena connection, and it serves to the other three in living, sleedping and childrens room. I love them all.

If you are not going to have a hard disk AND a DVD drive installed so the 800 is enough, but if you are going to have them fully aquiped go for the 8000 as it alsa has an additional card reader.

I also noticed, that the 800 are now comming with scrappy remote control. Mind not to get such a acrap.

Ok guys thanks for all replies, here's 2 main things I want from a new HD box.


1 must be reliable and work with all available images

2 must work with a vbox positioner (as my 7025 does not)

Leastwise these are all that come to mind just now.

The one 8000HD is connected to a Vbox III positioneer, work perfectly.
I did not have a go to run the positionerr with the 800er so I dont know, but I confirm 8000 + Vbox III = OK.
In fact, as the 8000 comes with two tuners. Tuner A there is connected to a diseque switch 4 x 1: And tuner B is connected to the mentioned VBox.

My dish is moved by a rotor arm that is presently connected by 4 motor wires to my Vbox my LNB is also connected to my Vbox with a LNB out to my DM7020 so I change sats via DM remote.
Will this setup work on the HD boxes?

your Vbox drives the actuator by 4 wires, two for power and two for reed.

The DM8000 will send the diseque signals through the normar coax cable which goes from the Vbox to the lNB. The Vbox interprets this signals and transmit the required commands to the actuator.

So the answer is YESS it will work, you will no need to use the remote from the Vbox, you will be able to move dish step by step with the remote control of the DB8000, you will be able to store positions and to recall positions, you won`t need the dbox reote at all, the vbox III comes also with a auto-off function.

In my case, I even left the Vbox near the antena, in order to have only one cable (apart fro ps) going down from the roof into the house.
