After owning a Diablo and TM6900 I (like many others) am considering taking the plunge, and purchasing a Dreambox 800HD or 500HD. As a person who has a relatively good grasp of setting up Home networks/General use of PCs routers etc does anyone consider using these products difficult, flashing images etc.I have no previous experience of using Linux does anyone think this would be a barrier to me from working my way around a Dreambox,a lot of Questions I know but any advice from people who are relatively new to a Dreambox and had similar reservations would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt you'll have any trouble setting up a DM and if you do there's loads of support available.

I avoided dreamboxes like the plague for years, finally taking the plunge a couple of months ago. Bought a cheap DM500-S to practice with, the thinking being if I fook it up it would have only cost me €50. I needn't have worried, the whole thing is a piece of cake, flashing is simple as is the whole set-up process, going to upgrade the box soon to a HD model.
Go for it m8.

8000HD is tdb; the 500HD is a poor second (but cheaper!); for all those who are going to say 'buy a nnBOX' - don't - dreamboxes WORK!

if you understand folder and file structures on a pc , and can ftp with say cueftp or flash fxp , dcc ftp , dreamboxedit channel manager using ftp again , know how to input an ip address into your browser to access the dream ( similar to a router admin panel ) , know hoe to turn off dhcp and input a manual ip instead , then you should have little problems using a dreambox

most images download plugins etc from a host server on the web anyway

the fact that its linux makes little difference , except when you set attributes in flash fxp etc its called chmod instead , and 644 for read and 755 for read/write are used on files

yes it takes some getting used to , but if you are comfortable with pc`s and networking I dont think you will have many problems

Thanks for your replies they were most helpful just one last query,do I need to abandon my use of a BT Home Hub and revert to a conventional Router?

I cant see why you cannot use the home hub , as surely its just a bt router ?

hopefully somebody with a home hub can tell you more about it than me

Thanks guys your answer speaks volumes. As my BT Home hub 2 is a totally dumbed down router its not even possible to block web addresses on it and has nowhere near the options as say a Netgear DG834 and so I read from this, that if correct Dreambox set up must be relatively simple many thanks again. DM 800 here I come! ....Does anyone know where theyve got the bu55ers in stock ,.....Real ones that is?

I would talk to Goldwafers, I thought there is a new DM500HD due out if not just out with a faster processor than the 800 range, but not 100% sure worth a check before you buy, as DM do regularly update the recievers.

Thanks tr8 but it appears talking to anyone about the Dreambox would be fruitless at the moment as there is a worldwide shortage of Broadcom chips holding back production, and so nothing is coming out of their factory in Germany, also to complicate matters 800 HD is about to become 800 plus containing 400mgHz processor (to match 500HD), some outlets are claiming to have stock but when pushed or ordered reveal they have none, and so it seems I will have to wait.If anyone knows different please advise.

always a fear factor with something new...but DM is well supported...needs to be installed logically...yep step 1-2-3...few hours it should be runnin (the basic's) then back it up and build on that, so if you do screw it up least ye don't have to start from scratch...great fun enjoy

It is supposed to have a fan, but we have to wait and see when its released. As for converting a 800 to a 800se this is impossible, they have different hardware. Unfortunately you will have to buy a new one.

I don't think you can convert it , better to buy another one .
