The Gizmodo story says they asked apple if they wanted it back, and apple were keen to retrieve it...

The guy who lost it is named and shamed, and is likely to find his cards when he turns up for work I'd bet. Apparently he went out on the lash with this prototype, and left it in a bar, gizmodo paid money to get hold of it, and have spilled the beans on everything inside it.

Funny thing is that they received the iPhone 4G prototype "weeks" after it was apparently lost. Gizmodo would not say how it landed on their laps and how they managed to get in touch with the right person who apparently might have qualms selling the iPhone on e bay but not to Gizmodo.
