can a dish (usually white ) be sprayed or painted to blend in to the background better without affecting performance ...?

I have and its fine, just remember to use mat car spray paint!!
yea i painted mine years ago(due again now)but as scrupples said you must use mat paint, because you must remember the dish reflects to a focal point which is the lnb and if you used shinny paint it would also reflect the suns rays to this point and burn a whole in your feedhorn cap and quite possibly overheat the lnb.Ian.
As long as you don't use Iron ball paint or similar RAM paint, it would be OK.

My dish is in front of trees and bushes so decided to spray it green. Didn't consider that it was slightly breezy on the day that I did it and the spray mist mostly missed the dish.
Couldn't have planned a better result ! As the paint is blotchy and in places hardly covers the light colour underneath it is well camouflaged - you hardly notice it from a few yards away as it blends in with the vegetation.

im thinking of matt black.. would normal cellulose car spray paint do the trick..?!
black, would that not become to hot for your lnb? black stores heat, dish is like a parabolic mirror, LNB sits in the focus of it.

Due to the high emissivity of a matt black body, it would absorb more energy, but also radiate that energy very effectively. However, the amount of energy radiated in this way is very small compared to the sun's radiation reflecting off a shiny finish, so matt black is a good choice.
What colour are sly minidishes? :D

exactly mate,so thats why black is the correct choice.
if you were to use shinny white then white reflects heat and as the dish is designed to reflect to your lnb, then this heat would be reflected there too.Ian.
seems others have done this:

the mini dishes are black mr bleu500...
my idea was to give it a light dusting of black paint to tone it down a bit... because white as they are they stick out like a sore thumb..!!..
