file system not supported

hi just formatted usb hd to ntfs and put 4 .mkv files on but only 3 work,i cannot record to the hard drive which is plugged into the front usb socket it just says file system not supported now my questions are
1 what does file system unsupported mean when i press the record button
2 why does it not play one of the mkv files that all play ok with vlc

I don't think you can record to NTFS formatted drives.

Probably why it's telling you unsupported.
