Hi Guys

Going to make my 11 year old desktop computer redundant althought i have
another desktop and a laptop.
At the moment i update my 2 Humax receivers via a modem null cable and
serial 232c connecter, i will not be able to do this when i get rid of my old
computer as my others do not have the serial connecters so i would like to
know what other options are available for updating firmware, channels list and
key bins for my humax receivers, thanks in advance.

Buy a PCI card with a pair of serial ports and stick it in your desktop PC.

has your old desktop a PCI card with serial ports? Use that one or just keep desktop after all (no screen or keyboard or mouse, just in network and work with vnc from your current desktop) for running Fausto (sssp) and the other humax stuff.

You can also use a usb to serial converter

You can also use a usb to serial converter

Have you any further details about this method, what software would
i need to make this work.
Have seen these converters but with mixed reaction, some say they work
others say they don't, all i'm looking to do is update any firmware although
this now seem unlikely and also update channel settings and key bins for my
Humax receivers and nothing else.

what software would
i need to make this work. These converters come with their own drivers. Plug it in a usb port, install the drivers and use it as if it was a serial port.

I would suggest you look for a usb to serial converter which supports your operating system. Converters using a prolific chipset are thought to be the best supported and they come with drivers for all windows operating systems, linux and mac.

I used a USB to serial converter with a FTDI chipset with my humax and don't remember having any problems doing anything I even used it with my serial elvis, basically it was no different than using the normal serial out on my PC

I think your find the FTDI chipset are probably the best its what your find in most USB card programmers

Dont forget that if you use usb to serial then your pc will probably name the port as com5 or something like that, you can then rename it in device manager but will also have to set all your humax programming programs to this port, and not the com1 default.

You can use any port you like you just need to free up that port first or just swap it with the port already in use
