Leigh,
Just curious, what TV do you have that is giving you this message?
Does the message pop up half way through viewing or is it when you first switch it on?
Do you use a HDMI switch?

Hi Lee, the PANASONIC VIERA TXP42S20 is a good one , its a remake of last years G10 model with improvements, I bought a P37X20 and It's very good. The S20 has a brighter picture than the X20 but not as bright as a G20 but there is a big price difference, shop around as there are bargains going, I bought mine from Am***n .

This is a well known software fault cuased by Sky HD boxes and if you do a google you will see items. a software update to tv can solve it so i would do a searh. you dont say the make of tv.
dont waste your money just yet, unless pic quality has detiorated,

ive had my Sony 32" LCD for 2 years now and dont see any probs with it i use both HDMI slots on it 1 for my dm800hd and other for my spider box900HD and use scart connections for my dm600s and s k y HD box , pic quality is still as good as ever in HD or SD .
not seen any messages on screen no nonsense TV does what its meant to do simple as that .
its just so much better quality than Samsung ive not seen anything made by samsung yet that was of any use in my opinion .
LG is pretty solid aswell cant fault LG in any way and as mentioned Panasonic indeed has superb pic quality and should be reccomended and Philips should be simple and effictive too .
Sharp/JVC i havnt seen those in action so cant comment .
But if this annoying message is a software issue with your s k y hd box then it is possible to do software upgraded to new menu i done that long time ago and is very simple to do just use google search im sure you'll see plenty of instructions which hopefully will resolve your probs without needing to buy a new telly .

Thanks guys.
My current TV is a Phillips 37pf5521d its about 4 years old and tbh its not that great. (50hz)
Ive updated my sky box quite a few times over the last month to make sure its not that and yes im using a HDMI cable.
I did out the problem down to the tv being old-ish and not full HD ?.. The Sky box is less than a month old and was a new box not a refurb so surley not that ?

LB :)

What ever tv you get make sure it has the free 5 year warrantee, its worth its weight in gold if it goes wrong.
John Lewis price match and offer the 5 year warrantee, most suppliers dont offer this.

ok I had a bit of a think and as I said this is a known issue not just with Philips. You dont say what sky box you have but if it is an old thompson it will have component out and as your tv has component in, you should try that and you wont have HDCP as that is only via HDMI lead. However, you may have a newer box so that is not a work round. You have a good tv and a shame to get rid becuase of software updates by sky.
You should make sure you have the latest sofware on the tv, dont worry about sky box as that has the software that is causing the problem, ie sky enabled HDCP and older tv's were not suitable.
I would also try philips as I am sure you are not alone. I looked on Philips and got a link for HDCP error and a solution.
Also ring the number that appears onscreen.
Dont give up as it could be a simple fix.
However the TV is a bit old hat now and I would go for the Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ80 42 a bit dearer but better and worth it.
good luck

According to Phillips there is an update being developed but as the TV has no USB they had no date to which i would get the update, could be months or even years he said !
The box is an Amstrad one of the newest smaller ones direct HDMI from box to TV.
Another reason im looking to upgrade is my dads TV looks better in SD than mine does in HD his is a 300hz TV compared to my 50hz :)

Leigh.

I have seen these in action LED TV is the future I even touched the screens does not get hot like Plasma does very much like the old Cathode Ray Tubes however the picture quality is great so expect prices to tumble pretty soon without being effected too much by the VAT increase.

and for best LED TV brands too

Thanks for the advice guys,
Can i ask what is / are the most important things i need to look for in the specs of a new TV?
I always thought it was how many HRZ it is? the more the better hence me looking at that panny with 600hrz?
Thanks again guys
Leigh ;)

ah thats a big big question, TV viewing technology has soared since you bought your last TV and with Blu Ray DVD's home cinema has become the norm. So now a lot of viewers will got for the biggest screen possible with the sound driven through a dedicated amplifier. This means that picture quality is the be all and end all.
And there are 2 types of panel, LCD and Plasma. The LCD buyer will rave about LCD and same for plasma. To decide for yourself you have to do research and get a chance to view both best in a home ennvironment as shops use a duff setting to suit shop conditions. It may look ok in a big store but no good in a small room. Also depending on what you watch will have a bearing, eg sports and films need a good panel, all the rest eg soaps will look good on most sets.
The 600hrz panasonic is another topic ie refressh rates and the idea is the higher the refresh rate equals the smoother the picture, it affects motion as in sports as well but by how much is debatable. Have a read here about REFRESH rates
xxp://hometheater.about.com/od/televisionbasics/qt/framevsrefresh.htm
Then have a look at reviews, here is a link
xxp://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/
and then join this forum, avforums and look for board on TV's and read away.
And finally it boils down to money, get what you can afford. When you see a TV you like stick the model no into google with reviews after it and see what it throws up.
good luck

Wow never thought it would be so difficult buying a new tv :117:
Sports HD and xbox will be used on the Tv if that makes a difference, i am a member on AV and been reading on there about the Panny too.
Before now ive just bought the biggest tv i could afford and not even looked at the specs .... Im a man size matters and all that !
Ill have a look in store at them in action, have a read of the booklets and no doubt get all the speal off the salesmen :blush5:
Thanks again

Well I simply cant fault Panasonic - had the TX-54Z1B plus its full all singing audio external speaker system for nearly a year now - and its truly BRILLIANT!
Only things seem to have missed out on are the inbuilt Freeview HD (mine only has Freesat HD) and the 3D facilities!:respect-050:

Don't go on spec alone.
First decide what facilities you want, like how many and what type of sockets HDMI/Audio etc, do you want DLNA ethernet streaming, do you want 3D, do you want LCD or Plasma, Freeview HD or not bothered?
Plasma gives best picture on SD broadcasts, so that leaves you with LG, Panasonic or Samsung.
Then you can narrow it down to a few models, and then go to a shop and view them, then read AVForums to see which has the best picture and general opinions.

Hi guys,
Just phoned my local Richersounds store who in fair have been good in the past.
I told him im looking at the Panny TXP42G20 he asked if i have sky HD when i said yes he told me im spending alot of money on a feature i would not use.. The Freesat HD, So he told me to start looking at LED tv's around my price range as they are better all round ?
A low range LED is better than a mid range Plasma?... For around £650 thats what id be getting i thought?
Bit of a spanner in the works here now
Good advice?
Cheers
Leigh.

Hi leeboy1,
I have been in a similar situation for some months. I dont have sly HD as I think most of these transmisions are in 760 not 1080. I think the full 1080 HD is only available with blue ray.
From what I have seen the LED is gives a better picture than plasma but it doesnt seem much better than LCD.
Seems your guy at Richer sounds has given you good advice, best of luck.

Led is Lcd it just has leds around the edge instead of the normal backlight, the screen is still an Lcd screen.
Sony or Samsung,,,the best chose!
For movies go for plasma!
For games go for LCD!

I've just got a Panasonic 42G20 from thos nice partnership chaps who include a five year warranty. Last Saturday it was listed at £599 but was out of stock by the end of the day. Now back up to £699 and still out of stock.
Only snag I have is that I'm struggling to get Freeview HD working reliably. Was OK for about 3 hours but then said "No signal". Not sure whether it's the weather, infant mortality in the TV, or if that model is a bit deaf. Any comments from other owners?
Otherwise picture is OK, iplayer works with an ethernet cable plugged in the back, and I think I will be happy once I've sorted the Freeview HD issue out.
