My Humax HDCI-2000 has ceased to function (cannot switch it on, no display on front panel. Have checked power supply and fuses - all OK), so I will most probably have to replace the box, whith a budget of around £400
Now being an old aged pensioner, I have no idea what to get, but is has to be a HD receiver, and very simple to set up and operate.
Have heard that some receivers are better than others at decoding encrypted channels.
I have a horizon to horizon motorized 1.2m dish, so would like to have a receiver that can handle this.
Any ideas or comments would very much be appresiated.

spiderbox 9000HD is worth looking at. Great box, great support, brilliant picture, very easy to use and update, and getting better all the time. Also less than half the price of your budget

I have 2 HD box'x now.
Spiderbox: very easy and what you call plug and play, also cheap with lots of free channels.
DM800hd-se, Still loading and getting to fully work but a lovely bit of kit, helps I had many Linux recievers before. Linux are not plug and play you need some time and knowledge( but can be easily found here) no free-be extras but works well with my existing freinds and my spiderbox not cheap, but hold value.
Looked at VU and AZ and others but after the time it took to get my tm9100 stable thought it was far better if going Linux to pay the extra and have DM as the support is great from many teams.

Some sat forum praised the Protek 9750 HD ip as being very good. It does not seem to have any slots for CAMs (Diablo - which I have been using with the old Humax 2000)Have any of you had any experience with the Protek box? Positives and negatives?

Protek can be good box ,,,,not to rich the Spiderbox for only one reson...fist they do not use Newcamd and Cccam and for second and importend reason no stb non linux have Develoep before Spiderbox Newcs server inside...Spiderbox is Client and Server as well...

cams are becomming part of history,i would try and sell them on to subsidise new reciever.

just need to be sure you can plug youre new reciever into the net via router , its the way to go what ever you decide.

my only experience with boxes you mention are the dreambox , but you said you need easy to set up , may not be what you looking for to be honest, cant comment on others never used them.

clone dream box 800. cheap reliable and can record six channels at once plus if u put a usb freeview tuner in u can record that to. takes the **** out of my az box and more than half the price cheaper. nothing to touch it as far as i am aware and that goes for spider box. picture is very good in sd and hd.

Yes, but for an old age pensioner it is difficult to set up. I need something VERY simple to set up and operate.
Thanks for your input though

Just got a dm800 a few weeks ago after selling my technomate 6900hd combo with diablo 2.3 light cam. No regrets so far, the dm800 is a great little box, with it connected to a router and it having cccam I can view all the popular tv packages including the one on 28e. Its the in thing now to have your receiver connected to a router of some sort. I think cams are a thing of the past now.:king-041:

Great Dane, You say you've checked the power supply on your HD-2000 but have you checked for bulging/domed capacitors on it???? Mine had the same exact symptoms as yours until I replaced the capacitors, now it's fine again.

I got a spiderbox 9000HD just before Christmas when my toppy HD went pop.
I've been very pleased with it, found it easy to set up and very friendly menus. Also there are excellent user set up guides on this forum which I read before I bought the receiver.
You can connect it to the internet if you want its full potential but you don't have to. A pair of homeplugs will give you an ethernet port next to the receiver if you don't already have one.
Have a close look at the 9000HD feature list to make sure there's nothing missing from your must-haves.

HD 2000 Power supply on mine it was the same - just replaced a 3300 mfd cap in the supply and it all worked again. Easy to spot - it's the biggest and the top was bulging. It was working until I moved house and then would not switch on although the optical out port on the back did glow red.

Bought a Protek 9750 HD just before Xmas but it was put on one side, to beat
VAT Rise. Basic as far as one card slot. Just set up to net, one file in USB
slot loaded then the net does the rest automatically. Seems to have CS
available that I don't get into. Very pleased with what it does for a simple
box.

i just bought a ET9000 Clarke-tech dual tunner to replace my Azbox and I think its the most complete box on te market right now, the most bang for buck. Its dual tunner pre-installed, runs enigma2 with support of PLi. Its responds really quick cccam working as a charm no lockups picture is much beter then on the Azbox. Its for basicly a dreambox 8000HD but for half the price. The only i doesnt do is put in 4 dvb-s tuners. But who needs 4 tuners....

For a simple to use and great quality box I would reccommend the Technomate 6900HD super+ or 6902HD as you get sat and terrestrial in one ethernet works good too and plug in any hard drive or stick to record plus a multicrypt card slot and 2 cam slots , if you need a cheaper alternative as the pension is shrinking all the time how about the Comag sl100HD with 2 camslots and diablo wi-fi works great in it for sharing. I tried dreambox and VU ,icecrypt and humax which was good when it worked but still went back to the technomate and so did 3 mates!!
However evaluate all the boxes here in a dealers shop and decide for yourself as some are quite difficult to set up and use.
