just put 1tb hdd in stb and it appears to have stuck loading blackhole has it detected the drive and formating or is it stuck

over an hour now it was already partitioned with ntfs

Ok, Load the image but do not mount the HDD.
Format via the setup menu.

sorted m8 deleted partion and booted ok thanks for you help
