Despite reassurance to the contrary, I am sure my 8000 - which is totally genuine -checked by the plugin- only has 64MB flash memory!! Whether I use Ppan 2 .2 which will show up to 148 MB or nemesis 2.2 -which will show 60MB memory once I get to about 10 MB or 4MB respectively the box crashes and the log shows error - no memory available. I have reflashed several times and tried several images but same result. Could I have inadvertently filled up half the memory with nothing? Is there a way to access the other 64 if it exists? It is very puzzling since all is loaded and running beautifully but I am veyr restricted in the flash by this. BU ones are no problems. It is only 8 months old so I am thinking of contacting the supplier. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks - Brain

Open a Telnet window and type free

This will show you how much memory you have, how much memory is being used and how much memory is free.

thanks -Hda
the trouble is I have done this and the result is the same - all those screen are available on the new Nem2.2 and having checked all the result is the same - it is almost as if it is in two blocks of memory and one has not been connected, like putting memory in a compuetr ram for example. Np matter what I load into the flash once I get to just under a tenth left the box crashes and a reflash is neededd. It all works brilliantly apart from that and i can run large Bu images but this is just very puzzling.Brain

First question Brain is what are you filling the flash with ? Picons by any chance ?

Second question.
why run your usable image from flash anyway?
install multiboot and run your usable image from your HDD,then you can fill it up as much as your little heart desires.Ian.

@sonic
No - so far as i can see the image Nemesis 2.2 - at 50MB goes in and a few addons - I dont use picons - but once it reaches more than 55 of the 60 shown it is blown - no memory available[ 140 0f the 150 shown on the Peter Pan image - same result.
@ passete
Yup - have read all the screens for image but it is this mysterious thing that the memory shown for the flash does not seem to be what it should.
@ Ian
thanks for that - I always used to run my 7000 from BUp images/usb/hdd but have listened to the advice well given here that it will run now on flash, but not on mine if I put very much in it.I can still boot OK to usb/hdd images and run well .
I can however no longer do a webflash since when holding the button down the wrong screen appears and 'Hash'76 20091014 appears suggesting that the flash has reverted to the internal small part of memory first used by the installed orig image[driver date?]. I have never made Dreamup via a usb/serial lead work on the 8000 so suspect that if I want to use webflash will have to resort to the tried and tested method of unplug and leave for 10-12 hours to allow residual current to drain fully - then all should be restored - I hope!! Thanks for all the help. Brain

So if i understand, you don't get the same results as hda5 and me ?

Hi there
no - i didnt but I can no longer check since the flash is shut off by the 'hash'76 20091014 screen I now get. I think the only answer will be an overnight drain of residual current with unplug to restore flash availability - I hope!! Lots of weird things happening here atm but will solve it!! Thanks for all the help. Brain

I remember reading on a German forum about a guy who had the #76 20091014 message stick when trying to re-flash an image.

He said he tried the following and it worked.

Power off at mains
Push and hold the TOP button (not the bottom button)
Power on (Still holding the TOP button)

Then after a few seconds he got the DHCP message followed by an IP Number.

Now take finger off the TOP button and flash your image.

Try that and report back.

This is correct as I have to use the top button to obtain my IP not the bottom.

I just get "stop" on my dm when pressing down.

The other 8000 in the house i have to press the down button, Strange!!!

Thanks for that guys. Really strange since I have used the bottom button for quite a few reflashings - perhaps it wanted a change or had another 'pressing' engagement. I will give it a try and report back. - Brain

Just reporting back. Yes it works and yes that does mean that after 30 or so flashings the bottom switch[as specified in the instructions for webflashing] has got tired and handed over the baton to the upper one!! A bit like saying use the off button now to switch it on etc!! Thanks for ths - hope others dont get such an odd and strange change!! - Cheers - Brain

Brian

my 7020 did exactly the same thing.
when it was new i used to have to press the down button to obtain my ip,but these days its the up button.i thought i must be going senile as it couldnt possibly have changed buttons on its own.nice to know im not going mad and this has happened to others too.Ian.

Always remember to check the bootloader before you get a new image flashed.
Flashing directly a totally new image with a new new bootloader could give some troubles also.

Hi snakie
I always check this since I came unstuck a few months ago but it is often only specified as 1.5 or 1.6 so have l been rather misguided to think this is sufficient? the webflash usually says that you are not up to date but to go ahead and new loader will be added. Thanks for your caveat. Brain

Hi, what is actually specified as 1.5 and 1.6 is not the bootloader but the Open Embedded, lets call it the way the parts do the image.
1.6 is the newest one which works with newer and different drivers which add more features for the box (sometimes features you cant really see them ).

Hi Snakie
Really getting the hang of it now, and all seems to be running like a dream - ha! Also wanted to be able to access one or two older BU images etc so have got both BA and Meo installed to give me more access flexibility BUT Ba overrides all and cant actually get to the other images although they are in view and can start Meo but BA takes over. Any ideas? All computers are mounted and accessible but not a PC in sight[ bar my daughter's] and no leads whatsoever - doesnt seem to be any conflict atm. Cheers - brain

Sorry i dont use multiboot on my 8000, i like it stable with flash running image.
I know 1 thing, avoid mixing old images with new images!Even in multiboot!

Hi snakie
The flash thing was where I got into trouble, hence why I started the thread, since the memory doesnt seem to take much. Once image of 48M is expanded and then expanded as it goes in there is not a lot left. Two or three cams, tunisiasat and an updater - if I then put a skin or so in box crashes and so I start again. To date, only crash on Multiboot was a faulty download of a skin otherwise it seems I can just load stuff in and all flows very smoothly and silently from the HDD and it gives me the chance to play with images and learn. May think of installing a fan if I get any troubles. just need Meo.99 for the DM now!!cheers - Brain
