Do the images of this model read AVI files as does the DM8000?
Thanks

Hi Norge
I have posted a similar question on your other thread and hope someone more knowledgeable than me clears this up. Since they are usually the same images for both boxes I an surprised that this is such a difference. On the 8000 you just access these files via a setup in network/mount manager. Does the 800SE not have this? Cheers - Brain

I have never had a problem playing avi files on my 800hd when I had it and currently my 500hd, Vu Duo and solo all play avi with the built in media player.

@sonic
that was the reason for my enquiry since while the tutorial and the setup were all so well done, it would seem that the network/ mount manager one is far simpler?
@ Norge All my computers talk to the DM that way and files are all played well on all occasions being accessed via media player, or on the 8000 with the easy media plugin which gives much clearer access to titles on both HDD and from computer. Cheers - Brain

Which image do you have and which media player are you referring to? Is it part of the image or a plugin. I would like a link to this plug in if possible. And are you referring to 800SE model?
Thanks

@norge
Have you managed to mount your hard disk containing the avi files? You dont need to download anything everything you need is already there.

Thanks for all your help. I am trying to help a friend of mine who owes a DM800 but not a DM800SE. Do you think the software in the above link for the media player will work as well on DM800?
Thanks

who owes a DM800 but not a DM800SEYour topic is quite misleading. Its not a good idea posting about a different box and then telling us you are talking about a different one

I too am confused by this. No - you cant play them as such but they can be uploaded onto the HDD or they can be run from the mount file option from PC and mac. All downloaded films I have are .avi and play perfectly either having been copied onto the HDD or shared as a folder from the comp via mount manager and streamed direct via box to Tv. What more does one need to do? Brain

@x5
Sorry - I have just been corrected by Echelon. Evidently 800's dont play avi - I was just assuming that since they all share similar images/operating systems they would do the same with files.Am very surprised that the SE doesnt especially as it has been given such good write-ups. Didnt mean to give you false hope. Cheers - Brain

Jimrare sorry for the confusion....
Originally, I wanted to know if 800SE plays avi files as I am considering buying one.
Then sonic1 said above "I have never had a problem playing avi files on my 800hd....." And then thought if I can solve my friends' issue to play avi files on the 800 model.
Hope this explains all:)

You are wrong here. I owe a DM8000HD and can play avi files directly ---no streaming from pc. It is all in the image, no additional plugins. And as far as I know from this thread as stated by sonic1 the 800SE can play avi files directly as well. Maybe sonic1 can confirm this.

This was what I have already said earlier. I stand corrected by Echelon that the 800 cannot, but I was of the opinion that if the 800se uses 8000/800 images it should be possible. If so then files shared from pc/mac should play directly on the db from media player. Just the 800 has a problem? Brain

A .avi file can contain different types of video. Mpeg1 for example, mpeg2, mpeg4 or even microsofts windows media video format. To make things even worse, there isn't only one type of mpeg4 encoding but different flavours. Divx, xvid, h.264 are some of the different flavours.
All this video decoding is done by the broadcom chip. Some chips support some formats and some others don't.
The 8000, 800se, 500hd do support natively mpeg1, mpeg2 and a few mpeg4 flavours.
The 800 though doesn't support divx and xvid natively thats why we have all this confusion. You can see what formats are supported by reading the appropriate broadcom chip datasheet.

Jimrare, so the problem with the 800HD model is a hardware issue not simply software if I did understand you correctly.
Both 8000HD and 800SE should then have a chip with more support formats.

The real question should be "what does the .avi file contain?". You can find this out with Mediainfo, a free software which seems updated. Try it with different .avi files to see that not all of them contain the same data.
