Have been looking at usb external hard drives 1tb prices starting at about £45 are there any that are more suited for the spiderbox or any spec requirements transfer rate etc?

hiya ming..
actually i treated my self to one last week from A.R.G.O.S
IT WAS A WESTERN DIGITAL ABOUT £44. ( 320 gbs also)
has a usb lead with it and connected to my 9000hd.usb lead that came in the box.
actually have used it twice and works a treat...

normally via the menu-timer rather than the limited epg on the channel list i have,

Verbatim one I have works fine, not that impressed with the limited fast forward/rewind speeds compared to my Technomate 6800hd+, but maybe this will be fixed in the future via a software upgrade.

Before diving straight in ask yourself / read the spec......do you want one plugged in the wall separately all of the time or powered from the Spiderbox. Much above 500GB seems to want a separare power source.

I use a few Toshiba 500GBs (powered by USB) and am happy...ish! I use a Toshiba 1500GB powered through the wall to a Humax Foxsat Freesat PVR 320 stb and things are ludicrously slow. I suspect the Humax.....or more likely the pile of other rubbish on the 1.5!!! Who knows? The Toshibas, (Western Digital??), get good write ups.

Also the Samsung S2 series very good - I got a 320GB for £40 - very quiet

Format the Ext HDD to FAT32 in the SpiderBox

Have to agree with john.dat i followed his ecellent advice and also went for Samsung but a 500GB powered through the USB. the machine gives good quality playback and has speeds of 2x 4x and 8x fast forward/rev. and you can move forward on recordings using > on the remote whilst watching the action on your screen to make it easier a Blue slide control is shown on the bottum of the tv screen which helps you know how far you are through the recording, take your finger off the button and it stops immediatly ideal for search.

to be honest the 320 gb hilds loads of data,,,
am so impressed,,
last night i set the receiver to menu-timer on 8pm off 830pm..
the HDD came on also and at 830 the hdd + receiver switched off...
1 thing.. i noticed when you set the timer,, if you look at something else the receiver may not switch off..

Have you tried the right/left direction pads (next to OK)? You can jump forwards & backwards in fairly large steps, just hold the button.

Plugged a new Toshiba 750GB in. Didn't work. So went Menu...USB.....pressed yellow to Format (to Fat32). Worked! (I don't know much about formatting but my guess is that you need to think twice if you Format a USB device with existing files on that you want to keep!). 750GB is quite a lot but maybe not if you record HD channels!
