Has it always done this ? If yes the image has a corruption.
If no what did you lat add that caused this ?

I think it must be a common thing with 500's.

We have a 500 in the back room and there's also a wii. Everytime the 500 is plugged back in after the wii is used it does exactly what you say for a good few days until it gets fed up doing it!

I suppose the best course of action is to simply reinstall the image and when i get around to it I will.

Memory problem, probably.
1. Is it a standard box, do you have HDD attached?
2. have you set up a swap file
3. where are you saving the epg data to
4. do a 'free' - here's mine!

root@dm500hd:/usr/script# free
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 137468 97080 40388 0 460
Swap: 131064 0 131064
Total: 268532 97080 171452

no hdd , ive always used this rytec epg and its allways been ok , just downloads from the addons and i set it to update at 5am everyday . i was told i dont need hdd as it doesnt use much memory if i keep epg to 2 days instead of say 1 week .

ffs
how hard is this
do a 'free' and report back

Sorry mate but a 'free' won't tell you anything.

Free will tell you how much ram is available, what you need is a 'df -h' command to see how much hard disk or flash memory is available.

Ram, hdd and flash are different storage mediums with different usage, think of a hdd and flash as a place where data are saved permanently, and ram as a place where data are placed temporarily and which get erased each time you shut down/restart your box.

@davemaden
The best solution to find your problem is to check your crash log. The default location is in /media/hdd so telnet, ssh or ftp to your box and read the crash log generated.

@jimrare
If you read davemaden's post above - he doesn't have a hdd! Otherwise I would have asked for df -h as well!

'df' reports your systems disk usage. Disk doesn't mean exclusively hdd, it can also mean flash.

Remove your hard disk if you don't believe me and do a df. What you will see reported is the usage of your flash memory. You will also see a /hdd folder mounted in /media. This is simply a part of your flash mounted as /hdd. You can call your mount points whatever you like, linux systems don't care what you call them. For example you can mount your pcs hard disk from your network as /cdrom this doesn't mean that your mount is an actual cdrom, it is just a name.

Either way - I think he has a memory problem.
I pre-empted any problems with my 500HD - fitted the usb mod and have a 32GB usb mounted as HDD

when "root@dm500hd#" appears
type df -h (note the space after df)
using the mouse draw a box round the text
there are 3 little icons just above the black screen - click the one on the left (says Kopieren when you mouse over it)
Now paste that into your post

does dm500hd need to be turned on to do this ?

davemaden
14-04-2011, 07:44 AM
using dcc in the tools/ memory info theres 58% used in the root , but nothing in usb ,cf or hdd . box is running ok at the moment because i have only now and next on epg , its when i load rytec epg for 2 days that i think causes the problem , even though it used to run fine with 2 days epg .
i will load epg again tonight and check root memory again to see if its getting full and may try 1 day epg instead of 2 . thanks

TELNET
Windows 7 & Vista - telnet is not installed by default.

Start
Control Panel
Programs And Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Check Telnet Client
Hit OK

Click on the Globe bottom left or hit the windows key
type in cmd and then click on cmd.exe

You can change the appearance from the menu button top left.
I have buffer size of 200

Now type in
telnet 192.168.1.160 (or whatever is the address of your Box)

you will need to log in

You can now execute commands, copy/paste etc.
an example
type in df -h (and press enter)
now click the right mouse button
select Mark from the menu
Mark the text you want to copy
press Enter
the text is now in your copy buffer and you can paste to any application

cant se an error its crashlog 1290023612 , am i allowed to paste the lines on here so you can check , thanksYou should have multiple crash logs, not only one, as you stated that your box has crashed multiple times. Also try opening the .log file/files using your browser (right click, open with) or any linux editor such as notepad++, textpad etc. It will make reading the file a lot clearer than using notepad for example.

If you still can't find anything suspicious, zip the log file and upload it somewhere, filefactory, megaupload, rapidshare etc. (i am not sure if you can upload it here)

In my experience - crashes on a 500HD are memory related.
If you want any further help from me, then do as requested above.
