hi, you seem to know a bit about the 500hd and i keep having the same problem again and again and normally i would just install a new image and start again but this time i thought i had better get to the bottom of this. the problem is that my external hdd will not record any more nor will it play it is mounted as i can see it in the hardisk set up menu but not able to do anything with it i have done a df -h
root@dm500hd:~# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 60.0M 59.4M 644.0K 99% /
udev 2.0M 316.0K 1.7M 15% /dev
/dev/mtdblock2 3.8M 2.6M 1.2M 69% /boot
tmpfs 70.9M 500.0K 70.4M 1% /var
tmpfs 70.9M 28.0K 70.8M 0% /tmp
/dev/sda1 465.6G 135.4G 330.2G 29% /media/hdd
root@dm500hd:~#
and as you can see it is normally a memory problem that causes this sort of issue as you have do***ented (old fart).
is there a way of sorting this out so that all can be ok again and stop installing a new image?
will you need a crashlog?
help appreciated.

1. set up a swap file onto your hdd
2. menu|system|recording paths - check the default location

When i get to recording paths i get
default movie location /hdd/movie/
timer record location <default movie location>
instant record location <default movie location>
timeshift location /media/hdd/
what/where do i have to change settings?
ok found out how to swap file, the problem is that once i go to activate the haddisk as the place to swap file, i get a message saying that swap file failed and check for available space eventhough there is space on the drive, any ideas?

you don't need to change the settings, just asked you to check - sometimes the movie location can change if you don't have the drive auto-installed. So - that isn't the problem.
Swapfile .. hmmm hang on a bit.
try this script here:-

ok what do i need to do with this script, excuse me but i do not have the knowledge as you can see, simple instructions will help me and countless others whom will be grateful that some old fart told them how to put their box setup right.

It seems to me that some paths have been messed up or your drive isn't mounted or working correctly. Try physically removing your hdd and remount it again. If you don't know how to mount your drive do a search in this forum or post back.
For the record, a swap file is a way of increasing your RAM, by using a part of some other storage medium for example your hard drive to act as if it was ram. Again ram, flash, your hard drive, are 3 different storage mediums each working in a unique way. A swap file is only useful if your ram is not enough or if you are running multiple applications at the same time draining all the ram resources.
The 'free' command shows you how much ram is available, try it you will see there is enough ram available, unless you are running lots of plugins at the same time.

ftp the .sh file into /etc/script
change its properties to 777
then you can run it using the blue button (in OoZooN anyway)

hi Gents, thanks for your replies, i have tried to add the .sh file to /etc/scrip the file shows it is moving across but it is not there no matter how many times i send it across using ftp and dcc. so no swap available. because i have got picons installed my ram memory is full so when i try to do anything to do with memory i get the green screen and crashlog. picons as well as epg is filling up my memory, what i want to know is how can i remove the picons etc without a reflash?

picons are in a directory called 'picon'
to find the directory from telnet:-
find / -name picon
you can move the directory onto the hdd (use ftp)
