I have both 1.2 and 1.8 but am situated in Malta. I can assure you that you can reach many and many more channels with the 1.8. Both dishes are motorised.
The only problem with the 1.8 is that one cannot find easily parts for it when needed. I just had to chang ethe motor/arm and had to opt for a 36 inch which isthe only one I could get hold of . I also need the lnb bracket which I cannot get from anywere, so a friend of mine will try to make me a bakelite one on his lathe. The 1.8 is still woth it though.

all the main sats can be received with the 1.2m but the bigger dish is worth it for weaker sats

if you have a suitable place to site it -- yes -
had my 1.8 over 10 years now -- no regrets - a very good dish --

cheers c.c.

GO FOR IT, i had a 1.2m channel master upgraded to a 1.8 last year, i can pick most of the H's up on 7w, can also now pick up a couple of the Middle-East beams up on 25.5. --- i'm in Stoke on Trent, just down from you .

(i was so impressed with it, i brought a channel master 2.4, for even better signals, but as yet, its still sitting waiting to be erected..)... i'll get round to doing it some day. !!

I have both a 1.2m and 1.8m channel master.
For me the only difference is 7w.
I live in suffolk so get all 7w on the 1.2 about 75-80% of the time, better in summer.
The 1.8 gets it all the time, there are no extra sats the 1.8m pulls in for me.
Note:
The mounts are not the same on each, the pole diameter is, you need a larger jack arm. I use 36" on the 1.8. and 24" on the 1.2.
Both mine are groumd mount as as you are aware VERY heavy
If you have a fixed mount for the 1.8 which most were, your best bet is to find a 1.2 mount and make a conversion plate, the polar mounts are "as rare as hens teeth" these days and probably worth more than the dish, the azel was standard as most 1.8m were fixed.
Great dish's for lasting both mine are 20+ years old and still as good as new.
