had this for ages,but never been able to see the point of it.

you need the dreambox password to be able to login to the box from this in the first place,before you can then reset the password.
sort of defeats the purpose dont you think,if youve forgotten it?

As Ian correctly says, you need the root dreambox password to change a dreambox password.

That crack is a 350k windows file, it wont run on my laptop running Ubuntu Linux, so how is it supposed
to break a Dreambox linux password?

On a linux system, the only way to get root access is to boot using a bootable CD, mount the target systems
root directory, chroot into the host system and issue passwd command.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has used this utility or indeed to hear if it works.

Sorry to add to such an old thread but . . .

I just bought a second hand DM800 that appears to have been set up for a pay CS.
Whoever did it was fairly sharp. Changed password. Locked attributes, locked Samba, locked USB ports, etc.

But here is where he (or she) left a back door, the old passwd file had been renamed to passwd-.
Now Tuxbox still had the facility to rename :D
I simply swapped them both back to the default and can see it all.

My interest in doing this rather than just putting on a new image (as Ian suggested) was to see how the CS had been working ( server name, logins, etc).


Regarding the OPs task, I can't fathom how to login using the default but then to "crack" the one in the modified file; or does his task just overwrite the non-standard one with root/dreambox ???
