Heres one for the techs,
Ive got a dm500 upstairs running of technika homeplugs from downstairs router (dlink) and Vu duo downstairs linked via ethernet direct to router.
Today i have had massive problems , when i Investigated further both boxes have the same ip address.
I have dhcp ticked on both boxes and have dyndns address issigned to the duo address ie 192.168.#.###,dont know what im doing wrong.
Think i need to assign different ip to one of them but wouldnt know where to start.
Can anyone help please???

Set one of them to manual and change the IP address.

Untick DHCP. Edit the last octet of the IP address. If it's 192.168.x.7 for example, change it to 192.168.x.77 etc.

Thanks have done that, what about the dyndns address assigned to router is there any point in having this. Won't the router assign a different ip in a week or do?

yea they do get renewed but DHCP will not allocate the same IP to 2 different bits of kit only conflicts will occur when you add a manual ip to some hardware where its already been allocated by DHCP,as i said put everything on DHCP and reboot your router

i got a blackberry ,iphone, dreambox, xbox, ps3, wii, 2x laptops, sodastream and never get any ip address conflicts with DHCP

So all boxes should be deco enabled and everything will be ok after reboot of router

The router keeps all IP in the lan so there should be no problems

Some routers just do not handle DHCP well, which is why my advice was to set the IP manually.

Ok do if I put my own ip in one box say duo 192.168.0.197 and set just the VIP to dhcp off won't the router just change it in a week or so?

No. You are confusing external and internal IPs. It will not change.

theres a DHCP pool of address mate from .2 to .254 .1 will always be your routers (lan) ip /they are leased out and will change every so often depending on router but it shouldnt be an issue , i always leave my stuff on DHCP as my sly router with hacked f/w always allocates these addresses fine, but anrakh is quite right some routers struggle with this allocation process, theres a little programme for your pc called "Advanced IP scanner "its free and will tell you what everything on your lans ip address is,so if you want to manually assign pick one not in use and use that and manually assign

I've never had a problem before I started using homeplugs don't really understand what dhcp does but I'm just going turn dhcp on vuo and of on dm500

Basically

The client sends a request to the DHCP server. In your case the router. The client asks for the IP number plus related info.

The server looks at the request. Makes sure it's okay. If it is the server sets aside a number and sends out the info to the client. The client then sets itself up with that info.

I wonder if when it was time to renew the IP address one of the boxes was in sleep mode or something and the router thought it was gone. Not seeing that box it assigned the same IP address. But I'm guessing.

Personally I tend to set fixed IP addresses for fixed things. If it's plugged in with a cable normally I just use a fixed IP. This way if I need to access the device I don't need to think what IP it's at. .6 is my DUO. .3 is my printer. .2 is my computer.

I use DHCP for other things. My smartphone is setup to use DHCP.

With only a handful of devices fixed IPs don't cause me any problems.

i think i understand better now.

So i will turn dhcp of both boxes then make my own ip for each box, then i will be able to acsess the boxes easier without having to check what its running on.
Will the address i assign stay the same just by doing this method and never change ?
