Having successfully ripped some of my CD collection onto a NAS for use with a Squeezebox Touch, I have just started ripping some DVDs for use with my S4000. The ripped .mkv files play perfectly on my computer, but have no sound when played on the S4000.
Any ideas, please? :banghead:
Thanks.

There is a problem on many sat boxes concerning audio.
It is possible for both Sat streams and DVDs to have multiple audio streams, for example in different languages.
If the default audio channel for your S4000 is not the one used on the recorded DVD you will either get nothing or a foreign language. I don't have an S4000 but try audio options and see if it can detect audio on another channel (the options might be 0, 1, 2, etc or English, German, French, etc).

I put HDMI Dolby Digital on and when on an HD channel had no sound. That was through the HDMI connection to the TV.
Switching the Dolby off and putting the sound mode to stereo and the sound was OK.
Just a thought.

If memory serves, .MKV is a container for audio and video (separate streams), and although a good format, doest have the same compatibility as a .AVI (DIVX, XVID, MP4 etc). And our box's wont stand much chance with it, as the video stream is fairly compliant, the audio stream is compressed in a format for a MKV rapper to decompress, when played.
Have a look over to our German Friends, I can remember a Linux based plug-in for codecs (some time ago). Might be worth a shot, or encode them in a supported format, off topic but I would recommend Fairuse Wizard, for DVD to Divx / Xvid conversions.
Hope it help's.

Thanks for the advice. I used Transmageddon to convert the file to AVI with MP3 sound and it then worked. Interestingly, transcoding to AVI with LPCM also produces no sound.
The loss in sound quality using MP3 will be OK for films. I will need to investigate further to see if it is possible to improve the sound quality for music.
