Hi All

I want to get my dad a new satellite box for christmas to replace his DM800 which is great apart from you can only record what you watch.

I am looking for a linux box with twin tuners that would be similar to the DM8000 as this is what he has always wanted but the price is out of the question.

The VU box looks good but theres that many models I dont know where to start, is the VU the best option or is there other boxes better out there.

Many Thanks

Chris

i LOVE my Xtrend 9200 silverline !!! with the openVIX image, solid as a rock, eveyrthing just works, pic quality great.
havent used a VU+ DUO, but think its very similar and seems to have more support, but i hardly need any support as it works great!

VU+ is an excellent receiver, again very good images, loads of support great picture and great price, but make sure you buy an original and not a clone

New Vu Solo2 will be the best in the range but it will be hard to get one before Christmas.

1300mhz Dual core Mips Processor, 1gb Ram, 256mb Nano Flash, Not sure how true this is but Blackhole have had one on test for a couple of months with there image and boot time is supposedly around 3-5 seconds from cold start i would say that pretty much annihilates everything thats currently available even the Ultimo and puts it just above the Gigablue Quad

Have a read of the specs, 1080p and transcoding for mobile devices, gigabit lan and much more.

Hi

Thanks for the replies

Do you think I should wait a while and see what happens on the VU front.

Maybe they will release a new duo or ultimo also that will outdo the solo as its the cheapest model in the old range.

Chris

seems over the top for a satbox.

so does trying to stream your satbox over the net to your smart phone (in my opinion)

https://www.satpimps.co.uk/showthread.php?158825-streaming-video-from-satellite-box-help-needed

dont see the point at all in something like that, and whilst I am at it, these smartphones you use are over the top too (when they aint broke)

https://www.satpimps.co.uk/showthread.php?159319-HTC-repair-centre-have-lost-my-phone-what-can-i-do&p=858022#post858022

a simple £15 one from tesco will text and let you phone the AA when you have broken down

its all oneupmanship nowadays (my phone is better than your phone , or my satbox is better than your satbox)

sad really

(the above are my PERSONAL OPINIONS, which I have the right to air)

ps:- you should have seen the size of the smartphone on the gadget show last week , it was the size of a tablet, too big , too heavy and poor battery life, its harking back to the old days of massive an@logue cellphones that needed a separate battery in your other hand or in a backpack

as for asking where to buy boxes, the OP should contact goldwafers and see about a pre-order, seeing as we have a sponsor here and that no other alternatives would be allowed to be shared on here

The world of technology is changing so fast that is impossible to keep up.

A few years ago I said the same about smart phones but now I quite like sitting in the pub being able to keep an eye on the football or accessing information without having to go home and switch the laptop on.

Tablets and iPads are staring to replace computers in homes these days and by adding features to STB's enables compatibility between them to be much better.

agreed, but I was in at the start in the early eighties and things moved fast back then, but we will soon be towing buggies behind us with all the tech shown on the gadget show in it, as recently the convergence of tech has seen massive watches, massive headsets, and massive phones once more, as the need to build bigger and include more features has meant the concepts of smallness and ease of use with greater battery life have been lost

when sony invented the walkman and lightweight headphones or earbuds it was about miniaturisation , which started in the sixties with pocket transistor radios and transistors taking over from valves

in fact, all the valve theory I did at college about triodes and tetrodes and such is now wasted :D

they now include small toothpicks with smaller gadgets so you can operate them, and pens that are a microphone and earpiece to communicate with bluetooth back to the massive tablet you are holding in your other hand that will be dead before the day is out

Vu solo is very much the Same as the Dreambox 88se,,,single tuner in Both

Vu+ dUO is the Best Twin Tuner Linux receiver money can buy

If you did not want Linux then Technomate have the TM7102 Triple Tuner with a 500GB drive, all available online.

VU 2 Duo meant to be coming out in December but do not hold your Breath.

"when you are in a hole and the sides are collapsing - stop digging" ;)

your post was stupid and pointless and has nothing to do with the original question, not unlike my so called "ramblings" which as I said was my opinion, and you never elaborated on statement unlike me

the OP has his answers, and the shop is taking pre-orders
