Sorry if this is the wrong forum and please move it if necessary. I have a Sony KDL32EX503 LCD TV. I use it with a Panasonic HD Freeview PVR. This is connected with a HDMI lead.

I have bought a Yamaha YAS101bl soundbar to enhance the sound. Trouble is, having connected it as per the rudimentary instructions, it doesn't sound any better than the tv. As I use the Panasonic as the tuner, I connected the Yamaha by optical cable (supplied with the Yamaha) to the Panasonic. Using the Sony remote to turn down the tv speakers, I programmed the Panasonic remote to lean the power on, volume up,and down functions of the Yamaha.

Have I done this correctly? I've searched, and some users seem to connect the TV to the Yamaha by the optical cable. But as I use the Panasonic's tuner, shouldn't the Yamaha be connected to the Panasonic? I'm pretty disappointed with the "improved" sound and feel that it probably just connected wrongly. If the wife wasn't trying to watch Strictly, I'd experiment.

check the manuals that came with your equipment .

a tv will only normally output stereo , some output 5.1 only if the internal tuner is being used and is hd sat or fv .

a dvd or freeview box may pass 5.1 but it might not be decoded .

ive always used an a/v amp and cant remember the last time i listened to one of my tvs via its built in speakers .
