Hello everyone.

apologies for making my first post an information fishing trip, but I'm considering replacing my sky+ box and having lurked on these forums for some time, i figured i should just take the plunge and ask you about your experiences of the various boxes and which you'd recommend.

i have a budget of roughly £350 and have mainly been eying up either a vu+ duo or perhaps a dm8000 clone. From my ignorant perspective it would seam that both boxes have a large following, with the vu having perhaps better support in terms of updates and plugins. Given the
potential pitfalls to a clone box ranging from variable reliability to update issues i'm leaning strongly towards the duo. (hence why i posted in this section of the forums)

in terms of what i was actually trying to achieve, i wanted to the box to:

have dual tuners
work with a genuine sky card on 28.2e (currently no interest in cs, but it might be worth a look at a later date)
pvr, with ability to transfer unencrypted recordings to my pc over a network. (main feature i was after, format doesn't really matter)
dlna media receiver (server as-well would be a bonus but not the end of the world given i plan to store stuff on the pc)

From my lurking, it would seam the vu box equipped with various plugins should tick most if not all of the boxes, but i was hoping that someone could confirm it before i took the plunge (or recommend another box if appropriate)

many thanks

Zeke

No idea about sky but the rest is there. Obviously you'll need to network the box. Simplest with an ethernet cable but if cables bother you I'm fairly sure various USB WiFI adapters are supported.

Think if you want box to work with your sly card you need to take a look at oscam.

either the vu+ duo or its brand new uprated solo2 twin tuner cousin should certainly fit the bill and with a hdd addon your budget should be fine
I would also agree that using oscam will be a must on any linux receiver, not just the vu but dreambox etc too

I dont see any problems with what you have asked for and the twin tuner vu boxes should manage most or all of it

Thank you all for your replies:respect-053:, especially for pointing me towards oscam that was really the last missing piece i couldn't figure out.

one concern i had about the duo (which i removed after deciding to post here rather than in the general section of the forums) was that it might have been a bit long in the tooth and likely to be replaced soon.

the new solo looks like an almost perfect fit for me, and i think i'll be ordering one straight after xmas.

many thanks again
