Make sure you have a full backup copied in a different location to the backup one that the TOMTOM software uses, it is hard to update the maps for the first time, but once you have done it once it is quite easy, the guides work that are at the top of this forum, you need to double make sure you save the Topgear voices for your model as they are not downloadable anywhere on the internet, as there was a spat with the BBC over it, and I am still looking for them lol
Russell is the expert here, hope he can help you

All you need is posted in this section including the guides & software. As Dartford has already mentioned - make sure you have a full back up copy before you attempt any changes.

the wee box that opens with my tomtom says no back up option ,this is the bit i read on the tomtom forums
http://www.tomtomforums.com/t26558-any-way-all-backup-tomtom-10-x-firmware.html
seems the only thing u can save is maps and services , the OS cant be saved.
unless some1 else knows a way to do it

Hi wildecoyete3006
There was court action between tomtom and Microsoft which resulted in tomtom agreeing not to use the Microsoft component on future models. Therefore it is not possible to access the later devices with Windows. they can only be upgraded via the appropriate tomtom support application. Therefore up to now later models can only be upgraded via the official tomtom site. The system used is a form of Linux and has not yet be cracked. the later models include: GO 800 / 1000 / 2000 / Via / Start 20 and 60 Series. Sory wildecoyete3006 you need an older model.
