Hi all,

I am a noob and I am looking at buying something to replace my sly hd box.

I have seen a refurbished s3550 at a great price and was looking for some information from someone who actually uses one as I'm finding the reviews from online merchants are covering only the good points.

I like to tinker with anything tech related and am also trying to find out if there is plenty of alternative software and plugins available for these boxes, if so how easy are these to install ?

Don't do it!! Get an Enigma2 box if you like to tinker.

I would be planning to boot e2 on it as I've seen a few posts saying its possible....hopefully its not too difficult

Oh I don't like the sound of tht, should've waited til someone replied before taking the plunge and ordering one lol. On the plus side it was a good price. Do you have any knowledge with these boxes and no of any software that will be useful for it and where to get it ?

firmware and plugins for the 3550 are in the firmware forum and plugins forum at the top of this icecrypt forum

a twin tuner vu box would have been a better option for you to tinker with (if you are replacing sly hd)

I had actually looked at one however i didn't want to shell out as much until I know what im doing and find out how the service which is not spoken about works, If I get on well with this one I plan to stick it in my bedroom and get a vu duo for my living room ;)

looking at the patches it looks like jan 2013 was the last firmware patch in our firmware section for your box, and march 2013 for the last icecam plugin

no idea about E2 usage on your box, but we dont allow links to other forums anyway

yes, enigma 2 os for the HD boxes like the dreambox 800 and vu , enigma 1 os for the older dreambox 500 and similar linux boxes

Bored with it already and the EPG is terrible, think I'll be upgrading sooner than I thought,

Been looking at a vu duo , hopefully there EPGs are better and have more features.

a duo is much better, although I am not sure you can buy them any longer

you can get the duo 2, or solo 2, which are better than the duo, or maybe the uno and add a twin tuner ?

epg`s use crossepg or similar, and coolmans plugin gives a nice colourful display
my duo is set to download to a usb stick in the rear usb socket, and stores the epg data and the picons etc

Wow that sounds a lot more high tech , can get them on **** however I think that might be risky due to the ammount of clones I've read about,

Are there any movie and tv streaming plugins available for them.

yes there are streaming plugins, like ondemand , icefilms , 1channel , tsmedia online , movie online, you p*rn , mytube , youtube , rumours abound about possibly xbmc and other ones too, so not just a sat box
