I have one unit for years and running, hotbird, nilesat and arabsat. Does it mean that its only good to function on fta? Would investing on cams be a mistake and rather invest on new generation receivers? Thank you for any feedback.

O.k. but what type of receiver do you suggest, I am all lost with HD, MPEG4 etc etc..all meaning nothing to me, the technology wise non conversant. thanks for any help.

impossible to answer as its all down to personal abilities , budget , requirements , space , single or dual tuner (or more) , linux or bespoke operating system , card or cam slots or not , just so many different parameters to consider that nobody can tell you what you need, you have to make your own mind up

for instance, if you asked what car to buy on a car forum, 100 people would give you 100 different answers, it keeps clarkson and may in a job for many many years, they also change their minds week by week or year by year so what they tell you now may change in a months time, or a years time , so does clarkson have a merc ? , ferrari ? , ford gt40 ? , a murcielago ? , zonda or koeniggsegg ?

I do know I looked at the humax over 10 years ago, and bought a samsung 9500 viaci instead, they both cost a lot more than receivers do now, with far less features

I have also owned maybe 10 other receivers in that time , but if you want an answer , here is one reply you can consider

buy a VU Duo 2 from goldwafers, its the best on the market right now , its HD , twin tuner and runs linux E2, it can take an internal SATA 2 hdd too !

Or if as you say

think of something like Spiderbox6000, it may not be as sophisticated as the VU mentioned by Echelon, but is an exellent receiver nonetheless. You can get one cheap from our sponsor. I know it sounds like black magic iat first (and so it did for me at first) but it would make a nice and easy start (or re-start) on the hobby. It would buy you more time to do some research on the Linux boxes before you jump in the deep water ;) I know I did, and now successfully set up my first enigma box with all the bells and whistles, which I consider a major success for an idiot like me.
