Getting the daughter a Spiderbox HD6000 tomorrow from your Sponsor.
I have been on the sat scene for around 10 years now but only ever used Dvbs cards in the pc and the only box ive
played with is the F5 Slybox which i set up for her a few weeks ago, it is crap and also found out that its a clone damn, hence the purchase of the Spider.
The spider will only be used on 28.2e

A few questions

What does the box come loaded with ie Firmware Channel list etc.
Also on the setup guide it mentions setting up a motor but seeing that this box will only be used on one sat
do i need to bother with that?
Will i have to patch certain firmware to enable Cccam and enter C lines?

Tnx in advance

the box needs patching and also needs a channel list adding if you dont want to scan your own channels and reorder them

ignore the motor settings if used on a fixed dish

the patched box will allow you to use c or n facilities

easy peasy for your requirements

this "gift" aspect, no point activating it if you are only on 28e, just use c or n instead

Thanks for the reply Echelon.
Do the channels lists get updated regularly also does the box auto update the channels ie when they change channels to different transponders

It's a DIY box. You have to get the channels and sort them yourself and being on a fixed sat of 28.2 the gift will not do a thing for you? (only free sat channels)
You can use lines and It has Youtube and a limited IPTV function. (files you need to load to the box and they may only last a short period)
You would have a better time with this box if you could get more sat's to watch with the gift.

Great little box and great gift but I would not get one for a single sat or would tune it to 19.2 or 13. ( that's without using lines of course lol) GL

members here (like compass) update channel lists regularly so they can be put onto the box
this has been happening for several years with these boxes , so not just the 6000

no they dont "do it themselves"

you can scan yourself and update your own box, like the manufacturers intended

you can use the channel list editor and download a specialised channel list for your 6000

some several options for channel updating, but no "lazy person" option ;)

ie:- its not like sly where they do it all for you (which they charge you for in their subs)

so no auto update of channels or transponders , I dont think any can do that
(although there are plugins for linux boxes you can use on those , like the vu boxes for example)

I've now got mine fully operational and am using several sats from 0.8w to 28,2e

As echelon says the easiest thing to do is download a channel list which I have done but I am also creating my own using the channel editor

I used this software and specified several sats plus categories. 4750 channels later lol. You can sort by category and then put them into favourites. From there you can upload the list onto your 6000 and edit it on there if you want ie delete blank channels, unwanted foreign etc. then 2 years later you can think 'now why didn't I just use an existing channel list'

My initial thoughts on the 6000. We'll it looks a good value starter receiver. If I get well into this sat lark I might want to look at upgrading. But it's a good entry.

Only criticism. Poor menu. What o/s does it have on it by the way?

What you mean poor menu ?
It is closed source.

It is closed source.

I was inferring to it not being wife friendly lol. It takes her all her time to use the microwave.

It reminds me of one of those Chinese import car sat nav units lol. But they are often Windows CE. They are often closed source as well. I had some discussions on a form with some of the developers of those

I appreciate the limitations of such an o/s by the way and it's price point within the market.

if your going to run a fixed 28.2east dish and use N or C then maybe a Chinese VU+ solo would be better as once set up with crossepg/coolmans ect ect it basically runs itself. imo the spiderbox 6000hd although excellent value for money is better suited to 80cm/1m motorised dish with the softcam/biss/gift features as all these are redundent on 28.2east,regards mdt

Hi
Yes, but this thread is 2 months old, you need to start a new thread after reading up about the full spec of the 6000HD

Just to add if only using on 28.2e then DO NOT enable the IKS as the minute you do the 1 year timer will start and will end a year later regardless if you have used it or not. Leave it disabled and you can always enable it later if you go motorized or add LNB multi bracket* (providing your dish is big enough to add such a bracket) to bring in other satellites as well as 28.2e.

* For example using a 1mtr dish in Bridlington I was able to bring in 28.2e, 19.2e, 13e and 1W using a multi bracket, however when you add up the costs of four LNB's and the bracket it's worth spending a little more and adding a motor instead.

Re heyho's comment about the menu, I cant find anything wrong with it, it works well enough and like all software controlled domestic items (DVD recorder/TV/Freeview receiver/Microwave e.t.c..) a little learning on the part of the user IS required but remember all the user needs to know are the area's that concern the functions they need.
The installation sections of the menu are really for whoever installs the receiver and the user does not need to access those area's in the day to day operation of the HD6000.
