Try Putting an O2 pay as you go sim in it, then get them to unlock it.

Yes but as TK4 suggests above, its just possible O2 would unlock it too - even if NOT a customer - certainly worth trying, plus be a 'one-off' cost maybe up to £20?

that link is of no use to me as im in southern Ireland and I don,t have a English pay as you go phone number etc
you need to input a mobile number on that site and I don,t have a English o2 number.

The problem with iPhones is they have to be unlocked by Apple. The network sends your request to them, I don't think you can do it any other way.
It may be easier to sell the one you have and buy an unlocked one.

I used one for my iphone 5 for £40 but I do believe Vodafone do have a unlock form on their web site for £20. You just fill it in and pay the £20

Apple unlock your phone via iTunes etc they don't need your number, it's all serial based. You just plug it in iTunes after 48hrs might even be 24hrs. I unlocked my iphone5 using fle**** as the networks weren't offering iphone unlocks at the time. It cost me £45. I could find out who did if you want?

iphone 4 here wont connect to iTunes,it says simcard inserted in this Iphone does not appear to be to be supported.

the simcard that u currently have installed in this iphone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server.this is not a hardware issue with the iphone.please insert another sim card from a supported carrier or request that this iphone be unlocked by your carrier.please contact apple for more information.

that's the above message I get when I plug it in to iTunes, and its original carrier is the o2 uk network and im in southern Ireland,so the simcards here wont work.

I got the iphone from northern Ireland where it was working on the o2 uk network.so its locked to o2 uk network.
and the person did a clean factory reset and wiped the iphone before selling it to me and must have forgot to put the o2 uk sim back in it to activate the iphone before sending it to me.

which means I have no way of activating the iphone 4 now,any ideas folk.any help be great stev0

It's the best advice seeing as your stumbling block is you need an UK sim but can't get one.
