Hi
Yes, you will get good quality recordings using an external USB drive or a USB Stick.
I use and can recommend using a laptop 2.5" drive (250gb) inside a USB Caddy (Google the caddy)

As stated by jbvid you can try that, and since trying different USB stick for a different box and using them on the 6000 I can say A Toshiba 8GB is fast enough for HD . A lot of things out there as you know but some are not as stated , too slow for HD capture , so very good question?

I use a 1tb usb wd my passport hard drive on my spider...formatted in fat32
the recordings made...sd or hd...are exactly same as just viewing channel direct from box
also get same results using 32g and 64g pen drives

Thanks guys, i have just tried a recording on my 2GB USB pen and its great, just 1 question when i press record button i have recording interval time to select from maximum to 15 mins and 24hrs, not sure which to select?
i will eventually get a 8GB + or 1TB external hard drive, will the higher capacity make a difference to the record quality?

you can set the recording interval time to what you want...
go to menu..recorder settings...here i set mine to 2 hours
now when you press record...2hrs will be auto selected...this can be reduced or increased by pressing left or right on remote
example...if i know a program is only going to last 45 mins...i adjust it accordingly if i am not going be there at time of finish
example=2hrs press left on remote and it drops time down by 15 mins each press
i have seen no difference in quality between usb hard drive or pen drive...both very good quality

Hi
Just to add, be aware when buying your recording media, a 1hr 30min HD program can use up to 6gb of drive data.
Also some of the larger disc drives will have a separate power supply which will need switching on or leaving on prior to doing a timer recording but a 2.5" laptop drive will run ok from the Spiders 5v USB port when a timer recording starts.

ebu*er have some good deals and pen drives and a £40 dlink dns-320 dual nas and other stuff at the moment in their daily deals section , including 32 gig toshiba and 32 gig lexar jumpdrive pen drives (ie:- you need a large capacity stick as recordings take up a lot of space) - with free delivery too
ideally you need the external hdd as mentioned above, with good capacity of say 250 gig to 1 tb
On a portable hard drive it can be formatted to NTFS.

@rasp yes mate you are correct it can be ntfs on portable hard drive
the reason i say fat32 is somtimes i will take my portable hard drive to a friends house
plug directly into usb on tv...fat32 plays all the time
only time i have had a problem doing this...is if its been recorded in ntfs
the message comes up on his tv...can not play this file
but on my tv...both fat 32 and ntfs play
thats why i suggested formatt fat 32...it will play unpluged from box on a tv

Hi Guys, is there a restriction as to the amount you can record onto a harddrive, from Spiderboxes
I remember been told max was 2 gb.
Am I completely wrong on this.?

I was going do a recording, and was called out,i did not have time to set a timer record
i hit the record button, this was roughly 10am...i arrived home later that day...around 7pm
it was still recording the channel i started the recording on,so roughly 9 hours one recording session.
never checked the size..deleated after watching.but am sure after 9 hours it would be bigger than 2gig
just chaecked my recordings on spider...it does not give me size of file
so...took hard drive..connected to laptop..and it shows me this(this is just one recording session on hard drive)
3 hrs 27mins recording...size 3.77g this was a sd channel...i would expect a hd channel be larger
hope this helps
Recorded in HD the other night for 8 hours no probs.

you will probably find that the file sizes could be restricted (like on a dvdr) but the recordings will have a much higher span before they fail
my dvdr recorder with internal hdd has a maximum of 12 hours recording (no idea what the file size is, or even if its one large file or multiple files like the vobs on a dvdr)
maybe a spider has some form of restriction on recording lengths, file sizes etc , but the fact remains that small usb sticks wont cut the mustard , 32 gig ones may be ok unless you do a lot of recording etc and not as much watching
in context, the hdd on my amstrad 500 gig drive in my sly HD box wasnt enough and would wipe out old recordings so I removed it and fitted an internal 2Tb sata hdd so now I dont get that problem , lol
my sony dvd/hdd hxd970 recorder had a 250 gig internal sata hdd so I removed it and fitted a 1TB sata hdd for similar reasons
I fitted a 1TB sata hdd into my vu duo too
capacity is the watchword here

File sizes shouldn't be a problem as the box will automatically split recordings into files at 4GB intervals to get round FAT 32 limitations. Das Erste HD from 19.2E takes up around 6GB an hour if anyone is interesting in testing the limit without it taking forever.

I have just done a little test on bbc 1 hd
i left it recording and just stopped it..
on opening the done file on my laptop from my usb hard drive..i get this result
it ran for 1 hour 31 mins, then it made another file 8 mins 30 secs
it auto named the files as 0001= 3.90g and 0002= 8 mins 38secs
when played back it plays perfectly...files were auto in ts format
so...mine reachs 3.90g then starts another file...
hope this helps...lol
As i stated before use NTFS and you will get one complete file
