a simple search using google turns up this wiki
_http://wiki.openpli.org/DM800install
seems to be exactly the same as on a dm800HD
I would suggest you didnt hold the power button on boot to get it into flashing mode with an ip displayed
if you had, this is the address for your web interface login using a browser
judging by your comments, you used the ip address it was using after a complete boot, giving the channels etc
Easy way to flash a DM 500 HD.
Shutdown your box, flip the switch on the back.
Switch on your TV.
Push and hold the powerbutton on the front and switch on your box.
Now, after a few seconds, a dos like screen will appear with all the network settings.
Flash your box using the webinterface.
Make sure you first flash the experimental image from DMM first to update your bootloader.
Then flash the OpenPLi image and you're in business.
--------------------------------------
INVALID IMAGE (OR OLD VERSION) means you have to flash the latest SSL.nfi first, before the box will accept a new image containing the new SSL through the web interface...
Official SSLs can be found at http://sources.dreamboxupdate.com/
05 September 2011 - Improved flash error correction
Starting today, images for the models DM500HD, DM800 SE and DM800HD PVR include an improved flash error correction feature.
In order to benefit from the improvements, it is required that you either flash the new image with the latest version of DreamUP (V1.3.3.9) or flash a new second stage loader ( DM500HD DM800HD PVR DM800 SE ) before flashing the image via your browser or other means.
If you use the online update functionality, the new second stage loader will automatically be installed after rebooting.
It is recommended that you flash the new image for improved stability.

The 500HD does not have a display - so no IP is shown.
If you have a router that reserves an IP address based on MAC address - do that.
otherwise, when you boot the 500 - it will be assigned an IP address by the DHCP server (probably your router), so you need to locate its (500) IP address.
You can use an IP scanner to locate the 500 - I use

power on as indicated above and point your browser at its IP address.

Gemini is now an add-on
I am using OpenPLI at the moment (I have a USB mod, so memory is not an issue)
