IPTV v SAT TV

Hi Guys,

Just wanted your opinions on where you see IPTV at the moment, compared with good old Sat TV.

I am moving in a few months time, and it got me thinking...do i take my Sat dish with me, or could \ is there an IPTV service that could rival Sat TV - which has served me so well over all these years.....

I have recently got into KODI (formerly XBMC) on two Amazon fire devices, and a Raspberry PI2 - and I have seen on the surface how good that could be, and its potential. But what i am struggling with, and what appears to be a weakness with IPTV, is the ability to record and timeshift streams \ channels, along with a decent EPG.

Could an IPTV setup seriously ever rival a decent E2 \ Motorised \ CS setup in reality? IPTV certainly does have its benefits over Sat TV such as being able to obtain channels from USA \ AUS etc, which you wouldnt be able to do with a Sat dish (from Europe) - but at the moment, that seems to be the only advantage.

Is there a wonder IPTV set top box, that could do what i want? A bit like a decent E2 STB setup can?

i thought the posts would have been rolling in on this topic .

iptv seems to be getting bigger day by day.

but i think as long as a share is possible it also has a future , and its down to the end user what they find easiest to work with .

95% of what i watch is on my pc in loft via downloads ,get a bit of peace from my kid/girlfriend , :ack2: my kid now though is starting to invade my space i may need to move my pc out to the garage , :eek:

Cosworth - it seems - judging by the lack of replies on this, that IPTV is still not taken that seriously - nor can it do much, compared to a Sat TV setup - i am sort of shocked, but also slightly relieved that i've not been missing out on any breakthrough tech...or have i?

looks like i'll be fitting a dish at my new house then!

now streaming bbc1 via computer IPTV to 40 " tv, qual good many methods to do this, all mine free of charge :cheers2:

i never watch anything tho
i just mess with it

if you learn how to get your own iptv links
then you can watch anything :)

Cannot get any much cr@ppier than mine, ASDL end of line max 2.7 down 0.3 up, but can still surf while using IPTV on one of the other computers to stream:D

@ozzsurf, it depends where you live in Spain, I am lucky I live in Southern Spain inland in Granada and I have copper adsl average 8.5-9 mb so no problems for IPTV but in a lot of places only WiFi or satellite internet is available, they both have limitations and also some adsl copper lines can only acheive about 2mb.
I am the same as cosworth4x4 I have both and could not live without a dish, well 3 in total one for 28.2, one for 27.5 West and a motorised dish. That pretty much covers everything I need and I use about 50% IPTV and 50% sat.

thank you everyone, im glad i made this post - looks like IPTV is not there yet, and wont be for a while.

next question is, do i just leave my existing dish and setup, and just buy new for new house. i got the dish shipped in from Germany - Gibbertini 1m Ally

I have both, MY DISH will stay, altho IPTV (Kodi) offers hundreds of options with films and sports for me yes the films / series are watchable, with very minor issues, like lagging on the audio, the sports are absolutely useless, even when you have a good addon...... Where as my dish option gives reliable pictures from the line I have ... Plus it's my hobby and gives me loads of pleasure.

The fun days of satellite have gone for me now ( saving me a fortune no more cards cams programers) and find I am using kodi quit a bit now also plex on a roku

agree with most posts. kodi great for films and tv series. you can watch WHEN you want. with sat I always seem to be in the middle time wise when wanting a movie. still use my sat for sports. far better picture quality in most cases. I know WHERE to find the channels for kick off. most people at work miss a chunk of the first half looking for a game and/or decent quality. keep both. on the plus side the android is small enough to take on hols

Totally agree qith the comments being made above.

I've a reasonable a/v setup. I've also got fast broadband so streaming isn't an issue. I can live with watching most things in SD as my Vu+ 720p spits the picture out and I suppose I don't get bad upscaling. Certainly football and rugby is watchable as well as Wheeler Dealers of course. But I did trial Netflix and found that the TV I have got (it's 55") really accentuated the graininess of the blacks even when using HD. And my experience of IPTV streaming is even worse. So at the moment I'm happy with the picture quality of 720p/SD over any streaming source.

I'm also happy with my Plex server setup for streaming bit torrent sourced films. I only download a film if it is over 2GB in size and is 1080p HD and NOT CAM source. Seem to get a great picture quality that way although sound is average (can't be bothered downloading these 30GB Bluie Ray ripped monsters).

Hi all,
I can understand people remaining faithful to the sat scene ,especially considering the big investment in hours and time put in for many years.I have motorised set up,set up by me several times in different positions at different addresses,dish changes, motor changes.Also encryption changes involving many cams,cards and programmers .Now to the present wth C/S with its HD limitations and freezing,certainly with servers I have used.
I have also been using what is now called Kodi for a few years, which has improved in leaps and bounds in recent times Great advances by the devs especially in regard to Android devices have made Kodi ,in my opinion,a very strong contender to come out on top eventually.
The costs of a set up £35 for a fire TV stick, easy set up for Kodi.There many others available and many tutorials on line.I used some of my Kodi enabled devices in hotels in UK ,l remember watching ashes test this year in Portugal, very portable. Fantastic!.
My sat setup ;Vu solo SE,1.1 triax,Dark motor ,works well apart from poor C/S.
My Kodi set up 2x Amazon Fire TV,1x Amazon Fire TV stick, 1 x Raspberry PI 2, all very good.
