Having moved to an Enigma box I passed on my Spiderbox 6000 to my son. This weekend after he decided to tidy his room!!! (now there's a first!) he presents me with the Spiderbox. He had plugged the wrong transformer lead back into the unit and says he saw a spark followed by the smell of burning.

I looked inside the box to see if a fuse had gone or or anything had exploded. Nothing looked amiss. When I plug it back in (with the correct transformer may I add) the unit shows a red light but that is all i.e. it won't power on/boot up.

Is there anything else to check or is that the end of the Spiderbox?

How many volts was the other power supply set to ? also was it the same polarity ? does the power supply still work ? the fact that something fried and gave off sparks and smoke means someting has been destroyed.

Get amagnifying glass and trace where the damage is, it should be quite obvious.

Why not take a hi res picture of the motherboard - around where the power comes in, and everything else.

Everyone here can speculate as to what's wrong - but at the end of the day, it's you who's going to need to get out a soldering Iron, Identify what needs changing and then be skilled enough to order and fit those parts - if that doesn't fit your skill set, just put it down to experience and order a new box. I personally think the VU+ Zero is the best box for the money if you want to spend around about £100 from Goldwafers - and to be honest - that blows away a spiderbox in many many many ways!

Good excuse to swap out my Vu+ Uno (another fine box) and donate it to y son and get a replacement then

Not sure it will go down too well with Mrs H seeing as I am after a new set of surround speakers as well. Oh well I can only try lol
