I have children who are old enough to play around with my satellite equipment when I am not around.

Is it possible to hide or remove the '*****' icon?

As a responsible parent, I have the need to do that. :)

No, its not possible, just lock the unwanted channels with a pin number.
OR You could set a startup channel (link below) instead of the icons, and still add a pin to the unwanted
