I've got the first ever edition, one of the topics was " Will Sky or BSB ever charge", they were both free to air at the time, it didn't last long. ( BSB turned up late and early adopters had already chosen Sty)

i only kept just one What Sat Magazine Dec 2010 Edition
its still in good shape but none of the very old 90's i wish i had now i bet it would be worth a fair bit of money

I can remember the then owner of sky saying live on television that they will never charge to view their channels. Lol.

I don't remember that but he did say Sky (now Sky One) would stay free. It became a cult among English speaking Germans who got hooked on Star Trek and the like. Around 1990 Sky Movies was a dedicated pay channel that also showed some of the top boxing matches.

When Sky One also became pay/encrypted it made a notable German (Markus Kuhn and his cohorts at Erlangen Uni) determined to crack some of the encrypted channels that showed their favourite English audio programs. Eurocrypt was the first to open followed a year later by Videocrypt. Not long after Seca Mediaguard and others were attacked.

And that started a hobby I have enjoyed for over a quarter of a century.

I also have the first edition and it was part of What Video. :)
It has number 1 printed on the cover.

i kept one when i had a clear out March 1993 , i probably had older ones that got binned .

I won 2 competitions over the years both were for Terrestrial set top boxes -- never won a satellite one !
One was a 3 View PVR which worked perfectly until something changed in the way programmes were transmitted and the company development ceased --
The other was a View 21 PVR which used to miss recordings so was unreliable --- but for free what the hell !
I also met someone locally who shared the hobby of satellite searching in the early analogue days when he had a letter published - we both had large dishes steered in exactly the same way using windscreen wiper motors.
Now a great mate.

28 years ago, Sty and the likes are are now turning the screw for well over price subs, and you can still get it for free or next to free, on line these days.

Going from memory (but it might have been another sat magazine) the first one I ever bought had Bart Simpson on the cover and they were proclaiming that this new cartoon was gonna be the biggest thing since sliced bread. June/July 1990 I think
