I have been using an ancient Laptop for the past few years to update/upload files on my Humax 5400. It is running Windows/98 and I have a vague recollection of someone telling me that this was ideal as Windows XP was a bit too quick for transmitting the data. Not sure if that was bull or not, but, it worked fine!

Anyway, for other reasons I am going to try to upgrade the laptop to XP and my question is.....will I experience any problems running the various programs to upload to the Hummy or do lots of people use XP?

hi mysteryman,
no m8, you should not have any problems what so ever, i have been running xp corp and pro for a couple of years, one on a 256, and the other on a 2.8 lappy with no problems at all, that covers a slow one that just manages to run xp, to a reasonably fast one.

but what ever you do, make sure it has a serial port
regards
voith

xp is fine m8, the only thing i use an old laptop with windows 98 on is for things like using jtag to read boxkey on recievers, i always use xp pro for everything on hummy and dreambox

For your information, I use a Dell P III with 128 mb ram, it runs xp reasonably well and it handles the transfers to the humax very well. I wish I had more memory, at least 256 but I haven't been able to find for a reasonable price.

getting hold of a new laptop with a serial port is going to be the hardest part, you may find yourself having to get a usb to serial adapter.
problem is some of them dont work.
there used to be a list on the pimps but im afraid i did not keep it? did anyone else? it would make a handy sticky
