how to connect humax to the internet

Can anyone advise me on the best way to get my humax connected to the net or what options are available?

I would like to connect directly to my router if possible.

Depends on what you want to do..

What are your reasons for wanting to connect to the net?

The reason for the connection would be to set up a card share

You need the relevant software plus a Null-modem lead

Set the Humax to CARD+S+EMU and the Protocol to HSIC or SCCP (this depends on the sharing protocol)

Make sure the COM port is the correct one...

I see that they also have a smartcard with UTP.
Its called cardlink, but only works with newcamd en newcs.

I have a null modem cable, and a serial to usb adapter for connecting to my laptop, the null modem cable is only about 1m long.
My router and main computeris are in an attic room which is about 10m away from my system, will i have to get a 10m null modem cable and connect to a serial port on my pc? or can i get something which will convert the cable to ethernet to plug directly into my router?

there is nothing in a humax to give a ip adress so you have to go through a pc im afraid, you could use a laptop that is wireless to your router (providing you have this type of equipment but im guessing you have not or you would have just done it doh!!!)
your best of getting a 10m null modem cable mate, any type of ethernet interface is going to cost you way more

The wireless laptop is a good option or make your own null
modem as its only three wires

You can mod a linksys router to add a serial port and there
is a version of gbox that runs on that router so no PC needed

Zad i do have a wireless laptop and will probably use that method and see how it goes.(make sure it works ok)

TNT interesting link but i dont trust myself with a soldering iron but i will keep hold of it just in case it becomes my best option, i would like to connect this way to save having machines turned on all the time.
I have found a 10m cable for £6 the pin config is
pin 2 ...to... pin 3
pin 3 ...to... pin 2
pin 4 ...to... pin 6
pin 5 ...to... pin 5
pin 6 ...to... pin 4
pin 7 ...to... pin 8
pin 8 ...to... pin 7

would this be ok?

Yes those are the correct pins for a Null Modem, you can
always get a long serial and put a short null on the humax
end which will also work ;)

Laptop should work fine though

to be honest at the moment it may be a bit pointless going for a dreambox unless you want the pvr functions (depending on what version your looking at of course).
there is nothing at the moment the dreambox can do that the 5400 cant.
