As I understand it The chances of screen burn are less with the latest models of plasma screens but the risk has not gone away completely.
To help protect your screen you should do the following:
1. Before you start using the screen you should run it in by switching to a un-tuned channel (one just showing white mush) and leave on that channel for up to 500 hours with the contrast and brightness turned down.
2. After this initial period you should only turn the contrast and brightness up gradually over a period of weeks.
3. Keep the contrast as low as is acceptable.
4. Avoid leaving the screen switched on when you are not watching it and be careful of dogs (digital on-screen graphics) e.g. channel logos

To get screen burn you would have to leave a static image
on the screen for days or even weeks, screen burn is very
rare with the current plasmas.
Screen retention is still a problem for some but can be avoided,
screen retention is not permanent it disappears
Running a screen in for a minimum of 200h is a good idea,
people only leave them on over night on a static channel
to get through the running in period quicker
Panasonic and Fujitsu hardly suffer from screen retention
but Pioneer do

Any static image left long enough including menus and
screen logos can cause image retention but as I said its
not permanent
Just avoid leaving any static image on screen for a long
time especially during the running in period
